I have a 1975 mercedes 280ce and it ran out of petrol, faulty guage, however, Its an injection model, and I put 20euro new petrol in to it.
Im not a mechanic so dont know what to do, other than crank it until it does start.. Ive spent 10 min at a time doing this, and it tries and then dies. Is this because all the crap from the tank is gone up the jets?

Can anyone tell me what to do?

    Thanks.

I can think of two possibilities:

    1. Air in the fuel lines. Bleed as much air out as you can at the fuel pump, and before starting leave the petrol cap off.

2.Either of the fuel filters is blocked. Along with one in the engine bay there is a second one at the bottom of the tank where the fuel lines come out of it.

    OK!

    1. How do I bleed the air at the pump. Do I just keep turning the key to crank it? Should i press the accellerator or not? Never had to before.

    2. I hope its not this...!

had my dad down earlier with new plugs for the car, so changed them and then checked pump and all fine yet car when being cranked almost starting but just wudnt fire.

I read before buying this model (buyers remorse) that the ECU and relay can be faulty... anyone ever worked on them, can advise further.

    thanks.

I had a mechanic out, he spent ages on it and still it wont start!

when cranked, it sounds like it is almost going to go, but then wont!

So far, we put new fuel in, checked spark and its good and plugs dry, pump working fine, distributor fine, tried some "quick start" and still nothing.

I need some one who knows these cars!!!!!

Yes I'd recommend Benjamin Lichtenstein also. But you'll really pay for the privilege of him fixing it for you.

If you want save some money I could have my mechanic have a look at it in my workshop out here near Citywest Business Park. Also I've the saloon version of your car ... the W114 280E so I know this engine well.

Where are you based? I can pick the car up for you.

    Hi Jimbob,

I would be interested to know where you got your information about my prices from. They are considered to be very reasonable compared to other Mercedes garages and so far I have had no complaints from my clients. I also haven't raised prices since I started the business in 2006!

What's your real name, do we know each other?

    Kind regards,
    Benjamin Lichtenberg (not stein :-)

    Dear Mr Lichtenberg,
I don't believe I've offend you or your business in anyway (minus the misspelling of your second name ... which I now publicly apologise for).
Private message with details of my hourly rates etc sent.
    Regards,
    Shane McAuley

    Dear Shane,

    please call me Ben :-)

I am not offended at all, I was just curious in how this conception of yours came about - since I cannot recall to have spoken to you before or given you an estimate for any kind of work...

Please send your details again, as I have not received them, yet.

    Thanks a mill,
    Ben

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Benjamin had a look at the car on friday and a few hours later he phoned me and the car was fixed. I was so glad as after the normal mechanic looked at it last week, and spent 3 hours on it, telling me the ECU was Faulty.... I was preparing myself for a shock!

All Benjamin did was replaced six plugs at a cost of 15euro, check the ECU and relay, some other electrical thing thats stuck to the body and the blue leads... sorry - cant remember what he said... anyway its fine now and i drove home happy!

Im new to the classic car scene in Ireland, but as far as the service I received from Lichtenberg classics I am very pleased.

Theres a big difference between a mechanic saying , it needs a new ECU and a specialist telling you the wrong plugs are in it.. a new ECU would have cost me a fortune....and it still wouldnt have been fixed!!!

Great news you got sorted :)

Now I'd love to know what fixed the problem. I thought your dad had already replaced the spark plugs?

Yep, well done on getting it fixed.

I used to have problems with the spark plugs on my 300CE. The parts guys just handed me Bosch resistor plugs. Eventually i realised the difference and found I should be running non R. The R plugs caused the distributor to fuzz up with verdigris, causing rough running etc.

My money is on something like that :D

It would be great if Ben or DrivingsCool could report back here with what was the issue / fix

    Hi guys,

the real issue was a combination of spark plugs and the points in the distributor. After cleaning the points and changing the spark plugs all was good...

    All the best,
    Ben
