BROD?

So i was playing away at COD today and my PS3 (phat 60 Gigger) froze up.

So i shut it down with the power button and then switched it off with the master switch. Booted it up and no disks are being read. Can stil insert and eject disks, sounds like they are not spinning. Is this one of these BROD's i've heard about.

Are there any diagnostics that can be run on the Ps3?
If anyone has had this before, is it worth trying to fix myself?
Would a system restore help at all, from what i can gather, it's a hardware fault but there could be a driver issue that a restore would sort out?

PS - I have not got the shakes yet from withdrawal! :D

    Any help would be obliged.

Its the YLOD - yellow light of death. Maybe its just the BluRay drive that stopped working - happened to me and Sony fixed it free of charge

Well usually with a YLOD the console doesnt boot up.
If it does its probably the disc tray. Ring Sony's helpline - 0818 365 065
and they will tell you to bring it to where you bought it and they will send it back to Sony - it takes about 8-10 days and its free.
Its a pain in the ass tbh

A 60GB? Sony will hardly tell him its a free fix. Their usual is sell him a refurb for €160......

OP Have a look at the first few pages here, one is about small claims court if you get no satisfaction from Sony, it may be worth looking into. Those threads also give the usual troubleshooting steps such as reformat etc.

BTW, if you can see the usual XMB screen, but it won't read any disk, its usually BRoD, not YLoD.

Thanks guys, i have full access to everything else on the Ps3 except the disks not spinning. I'll give Sony a call and see where i stand. I'll try a system restore as well, see how i get on.

Give me a shout when you try a system restore and tell me if that fixes your problem. I'm have a similar kind of problem to yourself. Did you get this after the last firmware update?

Put the ps3 upright, remove the disc and then put it back in, put your ear to the top of it and try listin for a whizzing sound. if the only sound you hear is a ticking sound( prob three ticks: "tick..tick..tick") its the laser gone im afraid. gona have to send it to a repair shop.

Cheers, yep, you've described exactly what's happening....except only 2 ticks :) Tried system resets and the whatnot last night but no joy.

I have an old 60 Gb that's on its way out. For a few months it's been hit and miss whether it reads a disc or not. It reads DVDs fine, it's just the bluray part of it that's ropey. Rest of the system was okay.

If you've the same problem I had, when you put a disc in the machine the symbol at the top right corner near the clock will spin for maybe 15-20 seconds, but the disc will never show up.

I followed a Youtube video to stripdown the machine and clean lens and it brings it back to life with a cotton bud and some methylated spirits - but it's not a proper fix. Have had to break out the screwdrivers about 4 times since January, each fix effective for a shorter time than the last.

Link for video is below, but I did pass it on to someone before and they totally ruined their PS3 while trying to fix it - so be warned, on the inside two of the three bluray drive connections are wafer delicate, and the power/eject switches are about as rugged as solder. Also, it'll void any warranty.

Thanks, i'll get on to Sony and see where i stand if i need to incur a fee for the repairs from them.

If that is takes 6-8 weeks and i have to shell out €160 then i might just following the video and doing this myself.

update - was on to Sony support and they alluded to this being a very very very common problem post firmware update to 3.30. The chap on the line wouldnt go into details but i got the impression that he was constantly getting calls.

So the plan for now as recommended by Sony Ps3 support:
    synch Trophies - Done
    Backup Media - Done
Full Format and Restore- In Progress, 2% done and another 3 hours 28 mins approx to go

I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Nope, drive is dead and i'm out of the 1 year PS warranty.

Time to crack her open and try to fix as per the above video.

Oh....they did offer me a refurbished PS3 for £131 including collection and delivery and they would take mine away.
