"Copyright violation alert"

This virus has installed itself on my computer and now I can't access my desktop. I can access the internet though. The Windows menu button doesn't work.

I was using the internet earlier and I kept get a pop-up saying "Windows Internet Explorer has stopped working" which was weird because I wasn't using Internet Explorer, I was using Mozilla Firefox instead (which I always use).

Then something called AP Manager appeared on my desktop and informed me it was installing something. I switched off my computer and then when I turned it back on. My desktop didn't appear just a full-screen window telling me I'm using a computer which has downloaded pirated material in breach of copyright laws. It gave me a link to a website about it which doesn't exist. It was icpp.com or something or other (don't look it up, it could send you the virus too).

The window says I'm facing a law suit and that it would be best if I didn't go to court and that I should settle it in the pre-trial hearing. There's then a link on "how to settle it before the trial" which I dare not click on.

Is anybody familiar with this? Any ideas what I can do?

Sounds a bit like ransomware to me.
If you were to be prosecurted for breach of copyright you certainly would not be informed in this manner.
Have you tried starting in safe mode & then run windows restore or running the Windows installation disk & try windows restore from there?

How do I restart in safe mode?

Press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press ENTER

Yeah something like this was mentioned on TWiT recently, definitely bogus.

Found this: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001931.html and say F-Secure Antivirus detects it as Rogue:W32/DotTorrent.A
