    Hi Guys,

We have an old civic that is used in the family as a second car , its a 1990 model and still going strong! Its 20 years old but less than 60k miles! It never has given any trouble and keeps passing the NCT.

I noticed the exhaust was hanging lower than it normally does today. I took a look under the car and there is a crack in the pipe and its hanging down a bit. Still far away from the road. I took some photos for you guys to see.

I know very little about cars and I was hoping some of you guys could give advice.

You can see the crack in the photo below ...

    I am wondering ....

    1) Is my exhaust specific to my car model? Or, can I bring it to a garage and can they fit a generic one?

    2) How much ish am I looking at to get the car fixed?

    3) I could buy a welder in Aldi / Lidl and try and weld it myself. Never welded before though. I'm wondering would it make a bad situation worse though?

    4) Is it possible to buy some sort of clamp that I can put around the crack to reinforce it.

Any advice you guys have would be great!

    Steve

have a look in a scrapyard, id say if ya went to kwik fit or a similar place it could be 200 - 300 to get a new one

I wouldn't try weld it with a mig or an arc welder. But if you found somewhere that could gas weld it, it might last another while yet.

these guys will just fix the part thats broken instead of shelling out for a new one whic might cost a bit

If your good at welding and are handy with a few tools. Go for it.
Also welding on the car, diconnect the battery and attach
    a surge protector.
Or take the whole exhaust off and weld then place back on.
Give yourself a few hours, plus WD40 for thoses rusty
stiff nuts on the exhaust. Good luck.

the damage is not too significant yet, you could try local garage that does welding maybe?? unlikely to cost a whole lot..

But if you weld and the problem comes back after say 2 months, then you are better off replacing it.

Upside-down and vertical welding on thin exhaust tube is most definitely not a good place for an absolute beginner weldor, to say nothing of the personal safety issues of rooting around under a tonne or more of steel whilst wielding a great source of fire and sparks, and potential electrical and fire issues on the vehicle.
Even with it on the workbench, it'd still be tricky stuff for a beginner to work on.

That LOOKS weldable, but you'll need to get someone who knows what they're at to have a look to be definitive.

I have never yet seen an exhaust with damage going around the top repaired properly while still on the vehicle. It MAY be possible to splatter some weld up around the top, but access and visibility will be severely restricted, and it's been only by dumb luck if all the gap has been sealed.

The damaged section of the exhaust will almost certainly have to come off to effect a good repair, and at that stage, it might be better to fit a new/spurious piece. Nuts/bolts/gaskets will most likely have to be replaced one way or the other.

A bodge would be to do something like welding the accessible bottom and sides of the break and then wrap the whole thing in exhaust bandage, but that's not the route I'd take unless I was in desperate straits and just looking to keep the thing going for a short while until I could repair it properly.

    For goodness sake.

Just go to a fast fit type place and change the exhaust back box.

    No other proper solution exists.

Why are people afraid to call into a garage for a Quote? op in the time it took you to take the photos and upload them a garage could of given you a quote.
Your surly not serious about welding it yourself.
The amount of treads that are popping up lately on the lines of HOW MUCH TO FIX THIS is getting ridiculous.

There has clearly been repair work done before as were the crack is looks like a previous weld and the clamp visible in pic 1+2 holding the tail pip on is not factory.

It could possibily be welded but if you are planning on keeping the car then just get a new exhaust section(they are specific to car models) and be done with it.

Honda replacement exhausts are more expensive the likes of opel/vw etc. Depending on what part needs replacing your looking at €150+

Your just going to annoy yourself trying to fix that yourself...Fast fit will give you a free quote for a replacment exhaust and fit it in about 10 mins.

    Simple as that

or just ring those guys in souhans ,fast fit will tell you you need a whole new backbox and pipe ,id a broken exhaust and went to them ,would have cost me an arm and a leg for a new back box and pipe ,

but then went to souhans and cost me cheaper just too get that bit of piping that broke refit with new pipe and got too keep my backbox ,
