I started my first job few months ago. Am currently being emergency taxed under PAYE. How long will it usually take to receive my refund once I receive my Tax credit cert?

Your employer can refund you the tax immediately as part of your normal weekly pay once they receive your new tax credit certificate.

But if it fell into last year, you'll need to get that from the tax office directly - your employer won't be able to do it.

As the above posters have said,
for last year you will need to apply to the tax office to get back any tax overpaid for last year, through a P21 Balancing Statement request.
You can do this online by registering at the revenue website, get your pin sent out and then log in and request the balancing statement.
for any tax from this year, your employer will put it in your paycheck as soon as they get your correct tax certificate from the revenue.

and don't go mad and spend it all in one go, we're in a recession remember :)
