According to some sources its a deadly neurotoxin and should never have been aproved for human consumption. This is a very worrying aspect as the artificial sweetener is contained in almost every "sugar-free" products that are out there.

In the levels that you would consume through diet drinks etc ya its meant to be totally safe .
As far as i know the unsafe levels are so high that you couldnt reach them through diet drinks etc alone.

What sources are they? What papers do they cite?

What about long term consumption though, if a person was to say drink a litre of diet coke every day for the next 10 years, would that possibly be detrimental to their health??

I did a small paper in college on this substance and by the end of it I really didn't know, there was so many conflicting studies. Personally I avoid it, I don't see any need for sugar substitutes in the average diet (leaving out obvious things such as diabetes etc). It also leaves a horrible taste in my mouth.

But that would only cause harm in a substance that would build up and stay in the body , which to the best of my knowledge it doesnt .

To be honest my view is this if your consuming fizzy drinks on a regular basis and drink products containing aspartame to help keep weight down then your doing more good in trying to keep weight at a safe level than drinking the full sugar drinks and being overweight.
If these drinks containing asparatame help keep your weight healthy then that would be more beneficial than the potential downsides that havent been proven.

    Truthrevolution,
post these "sources" and be prepared to argue their validity, or this thread will be moved to 'Conspiracy Theories'

That is what I don't understand, those morbidly obese people glugging cans and cans of sugar free cola every day instead of having the odd sugar coke now and then. I think that is where the problem lies, people ingesting large amounts of sugar free products rather than sticking to a normal healthy diet with nominal sugar intake.

The problem isn't the sugar free products but these people's abnormally large appetites. They're not capable of the odd sugar coke now and then which is precisely the problem.

Id be in the same boat most of the time however if i was picking up a 2ltr of fizzy drink i would usually lean toward pepsi max just cause i cant really see a big difference so might as well stay sugar free

Tried to discuss this before in conspiracy theories but the mods closed it down.Tbh im still researching about it and i thought by opening a thread here that i could find out more from competent science people :).The sources im talking about iv read about in journals and health magazines il see if i can trace the material from the internet somehow.

Tbh i dont think that aspartame causes cancer either, id be more worried about the long term neurological effects it could cause.

Plenty of full text papers on aspartame on Pubmed if you want to have a peruse...very interesting reads.

Here are some reports i have come across on the dangers of aspartame.Im no expert but maybe some of you guys here could have a glance over them and see if there is sufficient evidence against the artificial sweetener.

Im going to say this one time and one time only. If you ever post a statement like that again in a sci. Forum, im banning you permantly. This isnt mumsnet. In this forum, you quote sources and offer your analysis. I dont care what you "heard" or what you "reckon", only what you know and how you learned it.

on this forum, the burden of proof is on the poster

you cannot simply link stuff and expect others to tell you whether its worthwhile or not

if you make a claim, you back it up

that link you posted is from a really one sided site , if your goin to post links at least post ones that are from an impartial site.

Theres no need to issue threats, im just trying to have a civil discussion here

    edit:

I may have been a bit harsh.
OP, this is a scientific forum. A higher expectation is placed on posters here, and there is a much higher burden of proof than in other forums on boards. You may ask questions like " Is aspartame safe?" You may not - may NOT - make statements like "a load of sources say" without quoting those sources. Those type of arguments are ok in other forums, but not in here.

sorry if I was being a dick earlier, your opening post really wound me up, I have to say.

I realise that evidence is paramount but the reason i was posting here was to get a better understanding of the subject.Rather than presume i know everything about aspartame i thought it a good decision to ask the experts.Im not a science person so i wont be bothering you guys in this forum any longer.

That is not how your phrased your OP.

You posted a pretty vague statement, I think, looking for a reaction, by using pretty inflammatory language. We've all been around long enough to see through that kinda thing tbh.

    Cheers

If you wish to continue posting here, then statements like this, imflammatory nonsense, need to stop.

My normally very long fuse is burning quite quickly here people. Either get with the charter, and the tone of the forum, or there will be issues.

    Cheers
