    Hi all,

I wonder does anybody know of a reputable breeder of Cockapoos?

If you could PM me details I would be delighted.

    Thanks very much.

    pretty much, yeah.

why not visit shelters & rescues around your area? There is likely a dog out there that would fit into your life already rather than creating any more of a market for back yard breeders.

Cockatoo's are not really a suitable breed for pets. They need an awful lot of tlc.

Here's a quick link to one owners experience

You should get a pair of budgies or cockatiels instead.

I think you may have misread the post :o
It's cockaPoo - it's a cross between a cocker and a poodle breed of dog

Thanks for all the posts......especially yours Tallus....I was quite confused as to why you were recommending a budgie!!! :D

I know Cock-a-Poo's are hybrids - that's why I wondered if anybody knew of someone breeding them.

I have done some research on them and they seem totally adorable.

    The search continues.......

Aye do keep an eye out if it's one you've researched and really want, but also be open minded about another dog that might catch your heart :)
As said, since they're a hybrid, a reputable breeder might not be easy or even possible to find. Some people will just cross any old cocker n poodle and call it a cockapoo & neither of the parents might be purebred or there could be genetic disorders passed down. So just be very careful about getting one if you do find one.

People who breed them are not that likely to be reputable. They might be someone just looking to make money, or someone who had a Cocker Spaniel and their friend had a Poodle and they decided it'd be cute to have puppies. I don't know if there are people in Ireland breeding them properly, trying to get the best features of both, having them health checked and breeding them for good temperaments . . .

Your best bet would be to find ads of them for sale, on donedeal.ie or something, but go to see them, talk to the owners and see if they seem to know alot about dogs. Ask about the temperaments of Cockers and Poodles, health problems with both breeds, and the care of both breeds. Ask about the grooming required for Cockapoos, etc. and if they seem to know loads then that's a good sign. See the parents and play with them and see if they seem friendly. See the puppies and that they look clean, their eyes, ears, noses and bums looks clean. That the puppies are well socialised and not too nervous either, they should be friendly and playful. Ask the breeder if the parents and puppies are health checked and vaccinated, wormed, etc. Ask to see the vaccination cards (if they were vaccinated then the vet would hopefully have checked them over, listened to their heart and everything). Make sure to see the environment they were brought up in, whether outside or inside, it should be clean and big enough for them to get some exercise. Be wary if they have loads of different breeds of dogs around, or you can hear alot of barking from somewhere, since puppies farms often have lots of breeds of dogs around.

If the puppies don't seem healthy, or something is not quite right, then it would still be tempting to buy a puppy anyway, but you could end up spending a fortune in the end in vets bills if the puppy has hereditary problems, or an illness like parvo or something.

A Cockapoo will be a bit of a mixture in personality of both breeds, so if you read up about Cockers and Poodles then you'll get a good idea of what it'll be like.

Or if you can't find one you like (or don't wanna pay €400) then there are often young Cocker Spaniels or Cocker crosses in shelters. Or another type of cross that you might like :)

Good luck finding a puppy :)

May I just say thanks for all the great advice.
Yeah, I guess I just need to find a cockapoo somewhere and go visit the owners/breeders and take it from there.
I think that the feeling you get when you visit the seller of a dog speaks volumes.

    Thanks again everybody!

You wont find a reputable breeder of these Mongerals because anyone with the welfare of the dog at heart would not intentionally breed crossbreds. They are simply out to line their own pockets and rip off unsuspecting naive people who think they are getting something special. They are no more adorable than the 100's of dogs in the pound getting distroyed every day.

People buying these mixed breeds are encouraging backyard breeders who just pair of x dog with y dog with no regard whatsoever for any of the health checks needed, All you have to do is look at the ads and you will see that. And the pics of the parents half the time dont even resemble the breed they are supposed to be.

And then to charge up to 400 euro for the privilege:mad: when there are dedicated breeders of Cocker Spaniels and Poodles who run all the health checks, register and perhaps show and work their stock so at least you know you are getting quality puppies.
