I am an 18 year old student who is currently studying for my leaving certificate in Sligo. I want a new challenge this summer and I wanted to join the rdf but they are not recruiting anyone due to the recession. Can anyone suggest any alternatives pleassee?

Moved to the Military forum. Mods, I wasn't sure if this was the right place for it so feel free to move it elsewhere.

OP, you might want to check out this thread here in the Military forum, looks like the RDF is recruiting a small number of people.

My first ever (and possibly only!) post in the Military forum *takes a bow, exits stage left*

If you live near the North try TA there

    Hi yamanya,
limited recruitment is on the cards for Southern Brigade, I don't know what Eastern and Western Bde. are doing. Contact your local unit and see if they will take you. However, with the wait for security clearances I wouldn't be optimistic about being attested by the summer. Get your application in but don't expect any paid training over the summer.

If you live near the North try TA there

the TA do a 'summer challenge' course, its 7 weeks paid centralised recruit training - the normal procedure us that you find the right TA unit for you, they 'sponsor' you for SC, and you return to the unit after you've completed SC.

this is just another form of entry into the TA, this isn't a freebee or a 'look at life' exercise.

if you aren't interested in the TA i think you're going to have a hard time, the RDF recruitment targets for this year are infitesimal, they have a significant backlog of people who were interested from before the recruitment ban, and even if you were to get in they don't do any long(ish) paid courses.
