I just heard that NCT are probably going to be bringing in a thing, where cars that are ten years or older, have to be given an NCT every year. I'm suprised that nobody has posted this before, and I'm suprised that nobody has kicked up a fuss about this either. It seems to me that they are trying to make more money for the government now. I was quite happy with going to the NCT every two years, but this is just ridiculous.

I only heard it very recently.:o It would be great if it wasn't true though. I suppose it's their way of trying to take most of the old cars off the road, even though some old cars are very very reliable and some are just terrible bangers.

Hello and welcome to last year !

This has been well known about for quite some time.

Can't say I agree that a 2000 car is likely to need a yearly NCT as opposed to a 2001 but the MOT in the UK is yearly.

I just wish that there would be a semblance of cop-on shown. I heard of a story where someone was failed because there wasn't a fada on the county name Cill Dara...when there shouldn't be one anyway.
Or failing a person whose rear seatbelt buckles were under the seat from when the seats were folded down. I mean, all they'd have to do is take 10 seconds and have a look and there they would be. No fail needed.
The NCT is a perfect place for jobsworths, it seems, because the rules that are laid down by the company/govt are sooo strict.

Get a motorcycle... never worry about the National Car test again. Or just get something older than the NCT covers.

You are meant to present the car in an assessable condition. Its a free re-test.

Yeah, OK it's a silly oversight, but having to do a retest can in many cases necessitate taking time off work, so not free.
    Seems very picky to me.

The Cill Dara thing, on the other hand, is just wrong !

Can you explain how the NCT will take most old cars off the road?

All it does is verify that all cars from 3 years up meet a certain standard*, if an old car is well maintained it has no problem. If it's badly maintained then it is more likely that it has defects and shouldn't be on the road. Having had on +10yr old car sail through the NCT many times the only issue I see with older cars is that they have usually been subject to higher wear and therefore need more maintenance. Obviously this costs but that's not the fault of the NCT, that's a consequence of owning an old car. People who keep their car well maintained regardless if its age don't need to fear the NCT.

PS: Reliability has nothing to do with it. Cars can and do break down at any time, the NCT is not a reliability test.

    * emissions tests are based on standards released at the time of manufacture, not current day standards.

I was getting a vets car ready for NCT once and found used syringes and needles under the back seat.

I wouldn't expect them to go rooting around for seat belt buckles.
