There are a couple in my lectures the whole time

I haven't seen them myself but I met someone at christmas who says she is around campus a good bit. She is in the army and I think she said that there is a barraks nearby or something. That doesn't explain why they would be in your lectures though.

In my undergrad (2000-3) there were two guys in Arts who wore their uniforms every day, green jumpers, grey slacks (I think) and brown shoes. Found it a bit odd they had to wear them EVERYDAY, and people at the start gave them WTF looks but got used to it..

Think their fees were paid by the army or something?

And yes, Arts. One was in my tutorial for English lit.

Are they Cadets of Officers or whats the story because people are giving different accounts?
Is it true their fees are paid?

    From the website: http://www.military.ie/careers/officer/army/index.htm
Personnel of the Army who are considered suitable may, subject to the exigencies of the Service and to the requirements of the Defence Forces, by assigned to a course of study leading to a degree at National University of Ireland, Galway or a course of study leading to a Degree/Diploma at some other Third Level College of Education.

Tuition and examination fees in respect of Cadets/Officers attending college will be met from public funds. Textbooks, instruments, etc, will be made available without charge but will remain the property of the Minister for Defence. During attendance at College, Cadets/Officers will be accommodated in Military Barracks and will be in receipt of normal pay and allowances.

In connection with Third Level Training, personnel will be required to subscribe to an undertaking (or undertakings) that, in the event of them leaving the Defence Forces voluntarily at any time after they have commenced the course and before they have served in the Permanent Defence Force for a minimum number of years reckoned from the date of the completion of their Third Level Training, they will refund the cost of such training to the Minister for Defence including the cost of pay and allowances paid to them during the period of attendance at the course.

    Why do they do English?

Because they're allowed study whatever they want.

I have to say this is the oddest topic of seen on this forum. It's like saying has anyone seen the Malaysian students, what up with them?

The cadets, all live in the Renmore Barracks, out by the across the lake from the Radisson or Eye Cinema.
The Defence Forces pay for them to attend, college and they usually seem to do Science/Commerce/Arts/Engineering.

They have to wear the uniform (green jumper, slacks and shoes) but most of them get away without it.

Other than an occasional difference in clothes, they are normal people!

Do they have to? I'm genuinely curious and have no idea.

I don't think anybody's saying "Look at those weirdos" or anything, they just want to know what the deal is - why they wear the uniform sometimes and not others, whether the army pays for them, and what the conditions of their courses are.

It's just reasonable curiosity, rather than suspicion or anything.

That was how I viewed the thread topic as well!!:)

Sorry didn't mean to lecture :)

They do have to wear the uniform. But as you can imagine, it's neither subtle nor comfortable. Most of them end up leaving in the uniform, and then changing for college.
Every so often you might see a senior officer wandering round college to check up if they're in uniform.
They aren't paid to go to college, but while they are there, they get paid their cadet salary, and their accommodation is catered for in the barracks. Cadets are all sent to Galway to study. Because there is a full barracks near a university.

Yeah i think if they have a degree they get higher rankings in the army or something like that. They have to wear their army uniform at all times and could get in trouble if they are found in casual clothes!

They can go for any course but it has to be in NUI Galway.

Thanks for the replies, i was just curious because I heard alot of varying reports such as

    They earn 40,000 a year!
    They dont attend lectures!
    They have free accomodation/food/ books!

    Can anyone testify to this?

Don't believe anything the people who told you those things say about anything, ever.

    Don't think they earn 40,000

    They most definatly attend lectures!

They do have free accommodation in the army barracks in Renmore the same as all members of the Defence Forces

They are fed there if they're there

Possibly they barracks has a supply of books.
