Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Psychology degree but now lost? Advice?

    Hi everyone,

I'm very stuck right now and looking for any advice...

    I'm a psychology graduate from UUC. I have a good degree with a 2:1.
However now that I have my degree my problem is that, generally to advance you need to specialise in something, obviously.

I had hoped that during my degree something would stand out to me that I would love to move towards, but it didn't. I have searched copiously through the different areas of psychology to see if I would like any of them, but nothing really stands out.

During my degree I took a year out to work for the UNESCO centre as a research placement (voluntarily to get some experience), which I got a lot out of but, research alone is not what I enjoy.

I then completed a certificate in CBT following my degree to see if it was something I'd like to do, but since I'm not yet working in an area where I have access to patients (which any of the CBT diplomas that are properly accredited require, for good and obvious reasons) I can't go any further with that for now. Although to be honest I'm not sure with little other experience yet it would be something I would feel capable of doing.

However as I discovered with psychology, what I thought the course would be like and what it actually turned out to be in reality were quite different, and I realise that what I might read about a course or a career in a prospectus may be very different in reality.

At this point I'm feeling very stuck and I'm not sure what my next move should be.

I don't want to pointlessly do a masters, that on completion I would be back to the same point again. If possible I would like to take part in different types of work experince (voluntarily not a problem) to get a real idea as to what it is like to work in different areas.

I'm currently living in Dundalk but a move to Dublin or anywhere else if necessary is definatley not ruled out.

Does anyone know of any interesting or worthwhile places that offer voluntary work experience for someone like me, or somewhere that maybe you have worked you thought really opened your eyes?

The most important thing is what area interests you? You will have a pain in the hole studying an area where you have no interest. What elements of your degree did you enjoy the most?
