I commute all the time by train to Uni but am always wary if it's to get into an exam as sometimes the train has been late or not running.....
I always spend the night before an exam in my parents house in the Westside to be sure!!

    good plan.
I have the car so I can use it for exam time.
I just couldn't afford to drive everyday.
Any idea if there is a weekly train ticket, or what it costs to take the train both ways 5 days a week?

I buy a monthly ticket to/from Athenry and that costs 86e

I presume you can use a student travelcard to get discounts on weekly monthly tickets?

You can just call into the Student's Union office in NUIG and they can issue you with a travel card then and there (Express Service).

Fingers crossed that commuter fares from Athenry and beyond into Galway will fall when Oranmore station opens (supposed to happen next year but who knows).

Athenry-Galway tickets are significantly more expensive than Maynooth-Dublin and Cobh-Cork despite all 3 journeys being similar distances. Irish Rail say Athenry-Galway is non-stop/point-to-point and most of the trains are the new posh intercity trains; Maynooth-Dublin and Cobh-Cork have intermediate stops and mostly have older commuter trains. I think it's a BS excuse for having such a wide price gap - for a start, the prices from Athenry were not any cheaper when they were using the crappy old trains and I'm sure a lot of people in Athenry would love the option of getting off in Oranmore or Renmore rather than having to go the whole way to the City Centre.

I'm hoping that they will make Athenry-Galway tickets a bit cheaper at least when Oranmore opens as Athenry-Galway won't be non-stop/point-to-point anymore.

Nope, but I also pay 43e x2 for my sons monthly train tickets into school....:(
Works out a bit steep over the school year
