Dishwasher not emptying

We have a dishwasher but rarely use it, it was in the house when we moved in. Opened it last night for the 1st time in over 3 weeks to find that the bottom was filled with stagnant water. it obviously hadnt emptied the last time we used it but wasnt noticed when we emptied it or it had water in it from when i was messing with it trying to find out how to cancel a cycle.
I took out the filter and aside from the scum it wasnt clogged at all. Can i try putting it on a wash cycle to see if it will empty or if its the pipe thats blocked will it risk flooding the kitchen? Never had a dishwasher before...

Sounds like the pump could be gone - expensive fix if you're not covered by warranty

I had the same problem on a new dishwasher that I bought - there was a loose connection which caused the pump not to function.
