Brand New laptop - No internet access error

Brand new laptop which has Windows 7 as O/S. When I connect to my modem with ethernet cable internet works fine.

When I make a wireless connection with my router, the connection is fine but it says - connected. No internet access, and the internet is not working. I have another pc in the house a few years old that is connecting fine to the router wirelessly and is surfing no problem. So the Wifi adaptor is working fine and holding a connection it's like it doesn't recognise the fact that the router is transmitting an internet connection.

I tried disabling Mc Afee firewall but it made no difference. Any thoughts or ideas??

Have you double checked you entered the correct WEP key? If you put in the wrong one, it will still 'connect' to the router, but won't let you do anything.

type in cmd in the search window amd click on cmd

    then type in ipconfig /all

see if the laptop has an IP address

If the WEP or security code is incorrect the laptop will not get an IP address, the laptop will only be able to see the router/modem but not connect

Do you have MAC filtering on on the wireless network by any chance?

Im having the same problem. New laptop running windows 7 connects to wireless router (double check code is correct) but will not connect to internet.
Also, when I connect broadband cable it does not work and there are no lights flashing on it.

Old laptop works fine both using wifi and cable.

    Any ideas anyone please??

Maybe you might be better to hook up a cable to the router and turn off the wireless security. Then once you confirm that you can access the DHCP / Router / Internet without encryption, set up the encryption again with a password of your choosing... This is what I normally do in this situation.

So you're getting what Windows 7 calls a local connection, but no internet connection, is that right?

What do you mean by "there are no lights flashing on it"?

Since you're having two problems here that may or may not be directly related, there are a few things I'd suggest checking:
    • Firstly, check your router's configuration to see if you've got MAC filtering enabled. I don't know of any routers that enable this by default, but it could explain why you can't connect via either wired or wireless connection from your new laptop.
    • Next, check your ethernet card settings to see if there's an option for the hardware to be powered off by the OS (either to save power on battery or just when not in use). If there is, turn it off and try again.
    • For the wireless side of things, check what encryption you're using and whether it's fully supported by your laptop's wireless card. Try switching between WEP, WPA and WPA2 to find something that works (preferably by increasing the strength of encryption rather than decreasing it)
Let us know how you get on.

Im not great technically with this sort of thing but basically I think I am getting connected locally but not to the internet.
I have a 2nd laptop running vista and my wife has a work laptop running XP and both work fine.

When I connect the network cable to my new laptop there are no flashing orange or green lights to show that the connection is working unlike what happens with the other two laptops. Am I right in thinking this means there is no information going through the cable?

I will check mac filtering tonight (if i can figure out how to do this!)

I dont think the ethernet card settings are wrong as I already checked this.

Searching google it seems lots of people have similar issues but no simple solution to it.

I will let you know how it goes and thanks for the help

another point for awesome security. You should try put back something on that actually works. This is exactly how people get infected. Convenience.

What AV software are you using? While preventing you from connecting to a network is in theory a way of maintaining system security, I assume it's not a deliberate default configuration.

You should at least find out why your AV software is doing this, and if you can't get a good explanation for it along with instructions on how to reconfigure it, you should give serious thought to switching over to an alternative product.
