There's always two sides to a story, I'd like to know the other side before we all go jumping on the bandwagon of wanting pitchforks and mobs.

I think it was enough for me to read that he offering to tell someone where exactly to buy a rope to hang themselves

Yeah. The justice system in Rice County, Minnesota is famous for being a joke.

why is this so shocking, its not killing yourself is hard to do. if i was in a chat room and some random emo nublet came along saying she wanted to kill herself id have told her to go ahead too

Ahem...without trying to be harsh but what type of person kills themselves after a bit of internet coaxing & hints?

Yer man is clearly a can short of a six pack but I'd wonder about the stability of the victims & the nurse.

Well if they can't figure out where to buy a rope, they probably wouldn't have had much of a life anyway.

(What a psycho btw, and I'm not even shocked. People are despicable.)

People who are considering suicide already are obviously going to be easy to push in that direction with a few carefully chosen words, it's nothing to do with the type of person the are, but the circumstances they find themselves in. If you feel like a burden on those around you for example, someone could easily suggest you remove that burden and in that situation, those words have weight, even from a stranger, because they reinforce what you already think. Horrible, but true.

This is sick and horrible! If only I could put him in my death note :(

    True that :D

Still nobody in that situation needs any sort of encouragement.

The article is pretty vague about what kind of role he actually did play in the suicides.

And he did feel terrible about it afterwards (not that that makes it okay, but to me means he's not exactly "evil"):
The complaint said he had told police he stopped using internet chatrooms shortly after Christmas 2008, because he "felt terrible" about his role as an advocate for suicide.

Exactly, I think a lot of people in this thread are basing their reaction to what the OP said without reading the article.

Was he actually egging them on or was he just helping them to do it?

Mr Melchert-Dinkel had told investigators that he encouraged "dozens" of people to commit suicide for the "thrill of the chase".

Prosecutors argue that he posed as a female nurse - using nicknames "Cami", Falcon Girl" and "Li Dao" - and pretended to feel compassion for people contemplating suicide in chatrooms. He is believed to have entered suicide pacts with some prospective victims.

I read it and he's a scumbag. He manipulated extremely vulnerable people for his perverted pleasure and admits doing so. He may not have actually killed anyone, but he certainly played a role in their deaths.

They said they were on "suicide chat sites", so clearly they were close to the brink as it was. I googled the girl they mentioned in the article; she was suffering from depression and also had a few other things happen to her; it's not that hard to imagine that all coming together to tip them over the edge.

Encouraging / counselling someone to commit suicide is an offence.

I seriously hope your joking when you say that.

It's just a modern-day version of those people, in the crowd below, who encourage potential suicides to jump.
A bit twisted, certainly, but he's posting in suicide-chatrooms, to people who are threatening to commit suicide.
How could he get done and they don't?

A nurse aiding suicides is one thing.

Nobody mentioned it was a He in the Title. Just that the nurse was from the US. Just seems like redundant information, unless youre trying to start something.

Take it up with the BBC - I copied and pasted their Headline.

I must say man, you're overly defensive about your country. Relax will ya? I've more good than bad to say about America, but I can think of better ways to slight your nation than this, should the mood take me.

Hope that clears things up for you. Can we continue discussing the vulnerable souls who were manipulated by a twisted sicko, or would you like me to assuage your feelings some more?

No it isn't. Probably should read the articles. He actively sought out vulnerable people, posed as a female (not sure if this has relevance, but it's sinister in itself), and if that wasn't so bad, in the case of the 18 year-old, when she had doubts about the suicide, he convinced her there was no way out.

If you can reconcile that with shouting jump, you've some imagination.
