Stolen bicycle: please read if you've been near the arts block in the last week

    Hi all

My bicycle was stolen from outside the arts block at some point between Friday last and yesterday. It's a bright yellow racer bike, it was chained up so someone must have cut the lock with a lock cutters. Also, it's in pretty bad nick so it couldn't have been cycled away (because the gears weren't working) and the tires were flat. It must either have been carted away in a van or similar, or wheeled away.

So if anyone saw anything that looked like someone(s) cutting a lock and stealing a bicycle could they please PM me?

I'm trying to find a picture of it, but I don't seem to have any decent ones. If you see a yellow bike in a ditch anywhere, or over by campus accomodation, or in the canal or something please let me know that too. If on foot they really can't have gotten far.

Also, I'll be offering a reward if it's found (or returned - even if you're the f**ker that stole it).

    Thanks

Hate to state the obivous but have you checked with security?
If they see a banged up bike that looks uncyclable chances are high they cut it themselves and dumped it!

I didn't check personally with security, but my friend did for me. It doesn't actually look in bad condition, it's shiny and yellow, its gears just don't work right and its tires were flat. It was no banger like.

Still trying to find a picture. Haven't got any :(

There are bikes chained up there for years and they've never gone near them so why start now?

I feel for you as I use a bike to get about. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'll keep an eye out. Mine was nicked there before christmas, it was tied to a tree, (I didn't see the bicycle rack beside campus, I don't live on campus) and by the time I remembered, it was gone.
    Proper bum.

You should report it to the Gardaí too, they keep records etc

I may be missing something here, but if it was uncyclable (is that the word?), then how did you use it <_<

Can I ask what type of lock you had? I lock my bike at the arts block too and wanna be sure its safe.

My experience is that gardai dont care too much about stolen bikes, maybe check adverts/gumtree.ie to see if someone is trying to get rid of it?

Most bike locks are piddle. If someone wants to rob your bike, they will. Combination locks are easy to open too. If you're serious about keeping it safe then you need to spend e80+ on a lock.

    *She

It is a guy's bike though.

And actually, the reason it was there was that it was bolloxed and I couldn't cycle it home.

I had a cable lock on it. My other bike (rusty and old) hasn't been robbed yet, so unless your bike is flashy I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure the lock is long enough to wrap through the front wheel and around the frame and then onto bike stand. Don't use a padlock, get a lock that's part of the cable as they're harder to cut through. I've no idea how mine was taken :-( I've been leaving my bike outside the arts block since I started in Maynooth 3 years ago, and this is the first time I've ever heard of any bike get stolen. Sods law that it was mine.

One of my housemates last year used to have a bike, but no lock...

It ended up getting stolen all the time, it was kinda funny as he used to just keep on finding it and stealing it back.

Can't remember what happened to it in the end....

Cable locks tend to be easy pickings for the common thief, so if you want to go that route, invest in a good one that actually provides security, rather then deterrence....

Have you checked with the local bike shop? if the gears are banjo'd then maybe it might have made its way there or somebody could have come in with some oddly specific questions.
