O2 reliability vs. 3

First of all I have had a look back through old posts - so i'm not just being lazy by posting a new one.

I have no option at the moment (west of ireland) but to use a mobile BB option. I am half way through a 3 contract (not NBS). Over the past few weeks the 3 service has been giving me serious reliability issues.
Today I got a trial of an O2 dongle for 3 days (not enough imo) and it works.
The speed is comparable to 3.

My question is - what is the reliability of O2 broadband. Can I assume because there is no megathread that there are fewer issues with O2.

I work a lot from home so I need reliability.

    Thanks.

All depends on where you are TBH when it come to mobile broadband. Give me a location and I can probably give you an approximation of the sites reliabilty over the last couple of months.

I was talkin to a lad in the cancellations department in 3 as I have had the same issue.

He reckoned that every 3 mast in the country will be upgraded in the next six weeks.

Said there was a little congestion or something in my area.

i use an o2 dongle for work and it drops repeatedly - however there is another o2 dongle in use at the same office that never drops but mine is a complete pain. I was talking to rep from o2 yesterday and he said they're not designed for being online constantly.

Not a bad assumption, but it will depend on the signal and congestion. The only way to be sure is to try it. In general, I think O2 would be very reliable in terms of their network not going down or anything.

Your reliability issues with Three may just be a consequence of congestion. More users will shrink the cell size, possibly causing you to lose signal completely. This isn't a reliability problem, it's just the way it works.

No 3G service will ever give you the kind of service you need to work from home.

They've been telling people that for years. Even if/when it does happen, it won't change anything.

By their very nature, 3G mobile networks will always be congested in some way, unless you're the only person in the entire cell. This will never go away.

If you're getting poor speeds on 3G then you're going to have to accept it, and accept that the operator can do absolutely nothing to help you.

I can't see that happening, It took us a year to upgrade all of our sites a few years ago. I'd say they are doing some maintenance to the the RBS's where the bottlenecks are located. This is continuous work that is done by all networks to keep up with the broadband uptake.

You could switch to another Mobile Operator and if only 10 serious users in your mast sector sign up too, you will be down to near dialup speed.

Mobile is for occasional on the go usage. It's not designed for solid home / business use.

So even if Mobile is fine today it can be rubbish in under 6 months time. Only the peak single user connected capacity approaches Broadband performance.
