I stuck a CD in the other night and it won't come out.

The drive didn't "grab" the cd as I was feeding it in and before I knew it I had pushed it the whole way in.

I read somewhere that the cd/dvd drive will have to be replaced.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

You can pull out the CD drive from the lappy and take off all screws to open it or you can try press by screwdriver or pen little hole in front of the CD drive.

Thats one of the problems with slot-load drives, there is no easy way of getting a jammed disc out.

You can't remove the drive without taking the laptop apart either if I recall.

Ive heard of people getting discs out with improvised tools (thin bits of plastic, wire etc) or shaking it out etc, but there is certainly no reliable or repeatable method, because the disc can get stuck in a number of ways. You're also running the risk of damaging the drive.

If you cant get it out easily, then you are basically out of luck. As you say, the drive will need removing and/or replacing.

try flashing the bios of the cd drive, prob a last resort but it might reset the drive heads which are holding in the disc.

you can ca a bios on google...

Had that problem with my m1330, only solution was to get dell to replace the drive (it was under warranty)

    Thanks for the replies folks.

These slot drives are not the best I reckon.

I might try some wire to grip the center of the CD.

try what I told you, wire will hardly work. the drive heads have it grapsed.

if you do prise it out you will most likely break it anyway.

you can get bios updates for most laptop drives on the net.

go into device manager and see what model drive is on your xps, and get a bios like that,

when you flash it it will spin around and the drive head mechanism might release.

    nothing to lose

    Thanks X.

The paper clip technique has failed.

Will try the BIOS flash thing .

You need to open the laptop remove the drive open and remove the disk

Doing this does not guarantee it won't happen again as the drive maybe faulty or wore out

test it before you reassemble to confirm

Pm me if you need help or more info

    Right lads .

I got the stuck CD out this evening.

No screw drivers or bios flash.

Credit / bank card technique as seen below.

    Worked first time. :)

I tested it with a DVD and it worked fine.

Happy days, & thanks for all ur suggestions.

Edit: [When the blank CD came out it still had the thin plastic see thru cover/sheet on top of it. This obviously caused the problem.]
