I have to give an example of a 2x2 matrix with eigenvalues 10 and -5.
Can anyone point me in the right direction??

Hm, dunno how to do matrices in LaTeX.
Let A be your matrix with (entries a,b,c,d). Since you're constructing the example, and you have chosen the matrix to be as general as possible, you can pick whatever eigenvectors you want.
You might as well make things easy and pick (1,0) and (0,1) as your eigenvectors. Now, what conditions do you need on your matrix to ensure that it has the correct eigenvalues?

Cheers mate, got it out fairly simply with that. Was way over complicating things for myself!
