    Hey y'all.

I have a little home studio going ie: windows PC (vista), sonar 8 producer edition, Cakewalk Rapture Pro, MPC 500, Line 6 tone port KB37. Nothing major but still decent. I want to buy a hardware synth but cant decide what to get. I was looking at the microkorg (seems a lot of well know artists have used it (elbow use it live), and its cheap), roland sh201, or maybe hold out for something more substantial like a nord wave. What i do is more of a hobby for fun then anything else, thats why the microkorg appeals. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

So why a hardware synth? Why not a ton of kickass software and a good midi controller??

And hey, def upgrade to Sonar 8.5.xx totally worth it!

Good point, the toneport I have is good for recording audio but is limited as a midi controller, any suggestions on the controller front. I have a soft spot for hardware synths though, I think its easy to get lost in the gargantuan selection of software synths out there, Rapture is a beast though.

Ahh there's just such a Huge range of awesome stuff... Is it for electronic stuff??

A lot depends on what you're looking for.

don't get a microkorg. sound like ass, and the only people who use them are bands who don't really use synthesizers much.

So much better off with a good midi controller and software. The only reason you'd want a hardware synth is for its particular sound maybe. Much more possibilities with software.

I kinda just experiment alot, kind of a broad spectrum. I was just checking out the roland A-800 midi controller (only out on the market), its a full sized keyboard and it maps easily to all the soft synths in cakewalk, it has loads of knobs and sliders and 61 keys. Its around the 300 euro mark. I was wondering, if I get a midi controller can I use my toneport for audio in/out and use a separate controller for the synths and other contols, or do i need another usb audio connection?.

    This is probably the truth.

    Should be no conflict there.

I got a microkorg, an extravagant on the spot purchase, i don't 100% regret it as i can have it in the living room and mess around with it with headphones on. Its great having something you can just use straight away and has really helped in learning about the ADSR envelope but to be honest it is an expensive lesson. If i knew how to map the knobs and control VSTi in Cubase i would be happier.
