Facebook trying to take over the net

So Bookface have announced new plans to take over the world and beat the evil google at a conference .....errr somewhere. Anyhow I, for one, welcome our new Bookface overlords.......err no wait thats not it. I think its kind of creepy.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8590306.stm

Anyhow not sure if posting the whole article is allowed but here are some creepy excerpts:
"One of the points Mr Zuckerberg was making was that the web has become a lot less anonymous and Facebook is definitely positioning itself as wanting to be the owner of that information," said Maya Baratz of the Huffington Post.
Facebook said this means its members will see a web that caters to their individual tastes.
Crucially all this can only happen when users are logged into Facebook and "makes it easy to make any page (on the internet) a Facebook page," said Bret Taylor, Facebook's director of platform.

But Mr Malik sounded a note of caution.
"The whole idea to socialise the whole web is fairly impressive, audacious and a bit scary. I am very scared about the privacy issues around this initiative. They haven't really been very clear as to how consumers will have more control over the things they do on the web."

Levi's will integrate the "Like" function on its e-commerce site as well as build a "friend" store where consumers logged into Facebook will be able to see a list of their friend's favourite products and shop online with them.

Really - do people want their friends knowing what they buy online ? Do you want companies only telling you about their products that Bookface tell them you are interested in.

I think its quite creepy and is maybe more than one step too far. I expect the Bookface goon's will be bashing down my door and dragging me off soon, but if not I'm wondering what people think.

I'm collecting email addresses off the very few people who live far away I use it to keep in touch with, then I'm deleting my account. Not because of this, but the entire thing has just begun to grate on me.

Oh no, they know what my favourite books/films/bands are?? CALL THE ****ING FBI.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    That's never going to happen.
Sounds more like Facebook are pretending to be a threat to Google, to provoke Google to buy them out.

Sounds a bit desperate to me.

Yes fine but do you want your friends to know what you are buying ?
Supposing you order "How to satisfy your lady with a 3inch weiner" (ok we all know you wouldn't be, but supposing something embarassing) - do you want all your friends knowing it ? And do you want to start targetting getting ads for penis enlargement surgery thereafter ?

I really can't see that being an issue, what would facebook possibly have to gain by embaressing people like that?

Ads already to target people based on IP and page content, that wouldn't worry me. I use ad block anyway.

The impression I got was that it'll give people the option to share things like that, which is an option I'm sure people would enjoy, sharing what dvds, books, cloths etc they bought. Hardly going to force it on people though.

    Google will crush them.

The internet is becoming too open, too many fools revealing (whether they want to or not) their own personal details.

I don't understand how people spend hours and hours on facebook..........how about physically talking to your mates instead of "Paint my fence, LOL!"

Well these things have a habit of creeping in do they not ? I especially think its more creepy for younger people who are more impressionable and less aware of the issues

I'll agree with you there, it's possible people will connect facebook with sites, not aware that facebook has changed it to make it publish things. People just need to know what they're actually doing online, which a depressing amount don't.

Then don't use facebook connect to sign into other sites. That's how they link stuff you do outside of facebook to your facebook profile.

I find it handy. Being honest my life would be worse off without it. I don't mean that in some sad I need it to live sorta way. I'd have missed out on some great sessions with a few old friends I hadn't seen in years. The likes of Duggy747 is always sticking up hilarious pictures he ****ed about with in photoshop which always give me a laugh (especially that joker one :D). Reminiscing on times gone by when ever someone uploads an old photo they found lying about the place. Catching up with old friends and finding out what my friends I don't get to see regularly are up to. Hardly life changing stuff but still stuff I'd have missed out on otherwise. And yes I know all the above could be handled by text, email, phone calls but facebook just makes it handier.
