Moniters for producing and mixing

Having started messing around with Ableton, I've realised I definitely need a set of moniters, my current (big) iPod speaker set-up is a joke.

I'll be using the moniters for bedroom producing, and for DJing. Not for parties, but for recording mixes etc. Budget of €200 max, preferably under that.

Any suggestions? Ones with a good bit of bass would be nice, and subbass if possible, I listen to a lot of stuff with that kind of bass in it.

gonna be hard to get something that reachs down to sub bass levels for that money to be honest.

best ones id recommend would be yamahas hs50s.

they only reach down to around 50hz but like i said for that budget you wont find any thatll get down lower but can still be used to mixdown on

    €150 each?

Someone, can't remember if it was on here or not, recommended these, the M-Audio AV40 Studiophiles, they seem pretty cheap, are they any good?

no not really.if you look at the specs they only go down to 85hz,definitely gonna be tricky to sort out your bass with them.

not impossible though.you can mix on any monitor but the better ones make it easier.

everyone is gonna have an opinion on this.everyone thinks theres is the best monitor.

best bet is to look at who is using what.i know alot of folks on here have the yamahas(well me,and JT did up until very recently)

also look at buying second hand, save you some money

you are not going to get ANY monitor that has anything resembling sub-bass for less than a grand. So forget about it.

Get the hs50's. I know they're 100 euro over budget, but believe me they're worth it.

If you're wondering why we're all telling you to get the hs50's, go and learn about the ns10m's.
Now while the hs50's are not the current equivalent of the ns10's (despite yamaha marketing them as such), they pretty much do the exact same job ie. they make you mix properly.

at this end of the budget spectrum, you're not going to get anything near the quality of the hs50's.

KRK Rokit RP5's...getting a pair of them myself in the next few days. As for bass capability....the only way you can get it with monitors is if you buy a sub. Don't buy monitors if you are looking for speakers to colour your sound with unneccesary bass.

I have the krk's myself, love them, nice sound from them even when being pushed!

not going to get too into it but there are monitors you can buy that will go down that low its just that they cost alot more than most people will spend on them.Genelec make some that do.

bit unsure what you mean by this

That was probably me. For the money, and what I want them for (mixing at home at reasonable, not excessive, volumes) I think they're great value and quality. But I don't think I'd recommend them for producing, they just don't have the range you'd need to really hear what you're producing.

If you want a low priced starting point for your mixing and producing then I think they're worth a pop. If you're looking to buy once and buy right then, like the lads said, you'll probably have to either rethink the budget or get lucky in the classifieds.

Saw that alright, but I doubt I'll have the cash for another few weeks, so they'll probably be gone by then.

Might take (all) your advice and splash out of the Yamahas. In fairness, a good pair of monitors are something I'm going to need no matter what direction I take, so the investment would be worth it.

Question for folks which might help out grimey

what if he just bought 1 monitor for now.is it visable to mix off one monitor.i had a friend who did it but i was kinda new to production at that stage so i wasnt very objective about it.

would he be better buying a single one for now and save for the other one.

Well I know in drum and bass for a lot of the elements of the track are in mono because they're produced for a club rather than the home. So you've got sub bass, bass and a lot of the drums in mono. Guess it would work then?

so i guess if hes eager to get started he could just buy a single one for now whilst he saves up for the other one.

Lads a quick question on speakers, sorry I do not want to kijack the thread. I want to get a pair of speakers for home - as in attached to my pc for mixing etc - but would be nice if it was loud enough if I had a few people around kinda thing. I don't need monitors just something that sounds good with decent bass response. Powered would be nice, just want a simple easy setup for decent money. I don't even know where to start looking... Any ideas?
