    Hello all,
My name is Ian and it's my first time posting a thread here. I just want you all to be aware of a scam thats going on at the moment.
I've been trying to sell a set of drum pedals on adverts.ie, here's a link:
http://www.adverts.ie/206106. I got an email on the 8th of April from a guy interested in them. He said he would meet my asking price (€375) and that he would send a cheque or bank draft for them, but he would have his own shipper come and collect them. So far so good.
A few days later I got a bank draft in the mail for €2,000! I had no idea where it came from as that was all that was in the envelope, no return address. At first I didn't think that it was for the pedals, but I sent him an email asking if he had sent a bank draft. To which he replied yes, and that it was for €2,000.
In a further email he asked me to lodge it in my account and wait for it to clear. From that he wanted me to take my money and send the change via western union to his 'shipper', a name and address was eventually supplied after many emails from me asking what the f**k was going on.
To make a long story short, the buyers email account was from a yahoo account from Germany (yahoo.de). There's no point in giving you the full account name as it's long gone now. The Bank Draft was a fake, but it was a Bank Of Ireland (Marino Mart, Fairview, Dublin 3), but it was sent from the UK.
This is an easy scam as a bank draft isn't like a cheque, you don't need to wait for it to clear. Only the namee on it can lodge it, but you can get it cashed straight away. It's only when it bounces with the original bank some weeks later that they will come looking for their money back, but in the mean time, you've sent the 'change' via Western Union to a bogus name and address.
Sorry for the long winded account of this, but I've been on to the bank in question and they say there's been a lot of it about lately, so SELLER BEWARE!!!!
    Let's be careful out there.

This is a common and old scam. I hope you didn't actually send him any money.

No, thankfully not. I smelt a rat, but he was quite convincing so I imagine this works some of the time for him. What I called him in my final email I couldn't repeat here.

You're having off-thread dealings on an Adverts ad, that can get you banned. It's against the rules of the site. all dealings must be on-thread until a deal is struck, then you take it to PM.

This is a very common ploy with people replying to car adverts too ... loads of variations on the same theme over in the Motors forum.

    Hey Jor el,
I'm just trying to shed light on a scam situation to your other members here, giving as much details as I possibly can. If you don't like it, then go ahead and ban me, see if I care. Too many rules on this forum for my liking...like I have to make 25 threads before I can PM members? Give me a break....

Well that's me banned I'd say.
It's been short but nice knowing ya!

Come down off your high horse for a minute there, and cop on to yourself. I can't ban you from Adverts or Boards, only this forum. Having off-thread dealings, which you are, is against the rules that you signed up for, and is there for your own protection. Having on-thread dealings helps to identify scammers, as others can see what is being said and warn you.

If you don't want any help, then fine, go away, but don't take your stupidity and lack of understanding out on me, or anyone else here.

    yawn.............
Like I said I really don't care if you ban me, there's no high horse involved. I'm not terribly interested in you or this forum. I just thought I'd let people know about this scam.
So if you like I'll make it easy for you, go ahead and ****ing ban me asshole...either way I won't be back anyway.

In my experience, bank drafts are now Useless. Sold my quad to a friend 2 weeks ago and he gave me a draft for 4k. Could I cash it? Absolutely not, my bank said two weeks to clear, Credit Union the same. Rang the bank that issued it, they could not cash it! WTF?
