Sole Trader- Question...

Hi folks,

I am currently considering registering as a sole trader and was wondering what the costs involved are?

I am a trained web/ graphic designer and I would like to be able to freelance on top of my studies (currently studying degree in computer science) to make a little extra cash on the side without defrauding the government of tax money! (lord knows they need it!)

Also, if you register as a sole trader, do you have the ability to trade under a company name (e.g designed by: somename media) or do you have to trade under your own actual name?

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
