Civil Engineering Help

Hi all,

I'm doing my thesis on "investigating the potential for water management in educational buildings". I basically need to estimate the costs for civil work for a rainwater harvesting system I have sized. I have no experience with civil only really electrical and some mechanical.

Its only an estimated cost so does need to be exact to every detail.

I would appreciate any help on breaking down costs like labour, costing of jobs and materials, excavator hire, misc etc that a contractor would charge.

I have gotten these from a manufacturer:

The installation is fairly simple and will require three trades to install. I have detailed the basic installation requirements for the system. The cost of this may be assessed based on local hire charges/labour rates.

Civil works
Excavation of hole large enough for tank and concrete surround, tank is 12m3
Installation of access frame & cover (manhole)
Installation of concrete slab
Installation of tank and connection to storm sewer network (15m from ubderground tank)

Backfill with concrete surround as filling with water
Installation of cable ducting and 25mm mdpe pipeline back to building (2m away from building)

Re-instatement of area around tank

Approx time on site 2 days
Mechanical excavator required 2 days
Concrete required approx 10m3

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The NRA schedule of rates might (I stress might) have some rates that would be of assistance. Otherwise, I'd check with your college library for the E&FN Spon rates books to give a guide. Or a friendly Quantity Surveyor or Estimator.

Good luck!

I would say ring/email a couple of companies and get quotes would be your best bet.

By the way OP, will your thesis be available anywhere after you have finished it?

1.
N.B. Take your final cost total, divide by 100% then add 1% for the Site Investigation, that you were of course going to mention but it simply slipped your mind. ;)

Of course your estimated 10m3 of concrete for your 12m3 tank should suffice(because you know what your doing)....
presuming that the strata can take the weight of the tank(because of course it can)...
and won't sink away(because that never ever happens)....
breaking your connecting MDPE pipe....(because its flexible plastic dammit!)
releasing potentially <12m3 of water every rainfall event back into the surrounding soil suddenly...(err.....)
saturating the soil underneath the school founds 2m from the Tank...
( oh shi- )
maybe resulting in.........

.......? :D
ENJOY!
Alternatively, simply lump on...oh say..... 10x the final project ammount in potential compensation costs.....

2.
It's a school.
How are you going to get access to your work site? Concrete mixers & excavators are VERY heavy i.e. over playing fields/carparks/playgrounds that need reinstated/ resodded? how will you keep children away from the site i.e. What about barrier hire costs? 12m3 is a fair ammount of excavated material (imagine a generic Transit-type van, then bury it) Is there a septic tank? is the material contaminated? i.e. what about spoil disposal costs? thats all I can think off off the top of me head....

3.
Set out. Concrete mixer lorry. Excavator. Trenching. Laying Piping/Tank. Concrete Pour. Reinstatement. Cleanup. Everything going to plan. All in 2 days? No Chance.

Would be really intereseted in your final thesis though Sonic.trip
Cheers,
SM
