Long enough for a stop over?

I think I've decided to go with Continental airlines to go to Orlando in November, but I'm just wondering if we'll have a long enough stop over in Newark? It says an hour and 45 mins on their website, and when I emailed them to ask about immigration pre-clearance in Dublin, they said 'you must clear customs in the US'. Are they two seperate things, customs and immigration? Will we pre clear immigration in Dublin and then have to go through customs in Newark? If so, is an hour and three quarters going to be enough time?

Yes, customs and immigration are two seperate things.

However, generally it's immigration that takes the longest - so having that pre-cleared in Dublin helps. Customs is generally (but not always) a formality and easy enough to get through.

As for time: it *should* be enough, but as with all things no one can give you a cast iron guarantee. However, should something happen Continental will get you on to the next flight, if you book the entire flight booking as one.

as already stated they are separate and you should have enough time. Ive been to America a few times with short stopovers. One was fine and both me and my bag made it to LA on the same flight. The other time, I made the second plane but my bag didnt. The airline were great though, when I arrivied in LA and realised my bag wasnt there, the airline had it tracked already and were putting it on the next flight. I was given a phone number to an automated phoneline where I could track the progress of my bag. When my bag did get to LA, it was sent by taxi directly to my hotel and was there the next morning in reception when I went to breakfast. My advise is to pack a spare set of clothes and mini toiletries in your hand luggage, hopefullly you will be fine, as the airports are used to the transfers of bags on short stopovers, but you never know, the day you travel, the baggage handlers might be new and not up to speed and you bag misses the flight. Its better to be prepared :)
