So do I seeing as i've heard it from a reliable source that they're now charging €12,000 per gig.

    Oh dear.

I went down to register for the graduate career forum today only to be told it was €25 per day. When I pushed them on what the charge was for, €15 was for refreshments but I could have the morning sessions for €10 with no lunch. They wouldn't tell me what the €10 charge was for.

Now I know paying for education is a sticky issue with you but seeing as all the guest speakers are voluntary I dont see why I should pay the careers/alumni officers to actually do their jobs.

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't say it's a sticky issue for me; it's more of a grey area. I've softened to the idea of having to pay for a University education and i'm someone from an extremely working class background where if the grant system and free fees wasn't in place, I simply couldn't afford to go to UCC.

Anyway, you're right about the charge for attending the sessions. It seems a bit much alright. I assume some of the information will be just a rehash of what you can find online anyway as it is?

OMG. UCC has adopted the Ryanair model. Next it'll be toilets where you pay by weight!

Seminars and conferences frequently entrance fees. Its not a new thing at all. It isn't particularly pleasant but its very much the industrial norm.

    A sad day for UCC!!!

quite the opposite. hundreds of happy schoolkids having a brilliant time in UCC.
excellent result for the open day I'd say. Campus was buzzing, very impressive.

If you give kids a day off school they're generally happy plus it wasn't raining.

Some of the comments I heard from the schoolies:

Crystal swing, me mother loves them
How long is this **** going to go on for?
    State of the old yan

My favourite was a lad from Pres and directed at bunch of girls from Pres Ballyphehane:

They must be interviewing for cleaners today

Do the open day oganisers(visitors centre?) honestly think Crystal Swing appeals to the average 16 year old?

I think Irish entertainment must be going down the drain if these people are "hot"

No offence to them personally, every should try but every one shouldn't succeed. Im gonna get slated for saying that but i dont care.Does anyone find it creepy a man signing dirty lyrics to his sister

Depends if the avergae 16 year old gets the joke or not, I suppose.

Anyway, I slept in. :( I would have actually liked to see them live.

They weren't bad. I dont think they're much above karaoke bar standard but fair play to them for making some money out of it.

Some money? I'd say they made a ****load of money to put it bluntly. They're charging €12,000 per gig so if they didn't get that amount for playing in UCC today, they sure as hell got a substantial amount of money.

Who would I contact to find out if the college wasted the €12k on them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭orangetictac

I thought it was class lol.

The music they play isn't for me at all but I saw loads of people smiling and singing along. Camera Phones EVERYWHERE!

I heard the opposite to be honest. My brother was in there today and said most people left before half-way through and that it wasn't that good at all.

So that's why there was 2 coaches blocking half of western road at gaol cross then! Fcukers held me up for ages

Anyone who would hire them to play and then pay them 12k wants their head examined. I think people came just to laugh at them to be honest, its hard to take an act like that seriously.

Well it got UCC publicity (which is what the open day is all about) and will be remembered by all on campus. They're trite but it was a stroke of novelty genius and seemed to work very well.

I heard from a fairly reliable source (works at ucc) that crystal swing agreed to play the open day purely because the girls class were going anyway, i was under the impression they were paid very little, if anything...

They aren't - it's just an ironic, studenty, wacky joke which is getting really ****ing old now. It was funny all right a couple of months ago... for five minutes.

It's not really about whether or not they're talented, or musical or anything.
It was the open day for schools - bring the kids to campus and show them that it's a fun place and make them want to come back.
Crystal Swing played to a huge crowd, and it was brilliant. Whether the kids were singing and clapping along from a sense of irony, or because they like the music, or just because they had a day off isn't very important. The fact that they were there enjoying themselves is what's important.

I think that the open day was a roaring success - I've never (in the 8 years I'm working in UCC) seen the campus buzzing like that.

    How much did they cost?
