Someon gave me an old x box that hasn't been turned on in a year. It's been lying out in a shed an possibly got damp. Would it be dangerous to turn it on?

leave it in the hot press for few days if you're worried

If your putting it in the hot press, Id take the top off it first. Just incase any condensation forms on the inside lid & drops onto the mainboard. It should be fine though, take the top off and have a quick look it your concerned.

if you take the top, check the pcb for rust as well. that'll give you a general idea of how big your chance to "reanimate" it is.
