I suspect this may free to view rather than free to air as its aimed at the British market

It has been FTA for the last couple of weeks showing old GAA matches, rallying, aussie rules, among others. The on-screen DOG reads as Premier Sports.

    The PQ is awful though.

A HTPC with DVBViewer, a motorised dish and a nice 4:2:2 codec will get you the GAA right enough. :D

Sorry I should have clarified after the trial period.

+1 the PQ is terrible, even worse than E4 gets sometimes.

thats gas..... so technically if you live in ireland and dont have access to rte via an aerial you will have to pay sky a minimum of 22euro a month to see the gaa yet if you live in the uk and have a satellite dish you will see it free.....(ok ok I know manual tune and that but how many people with sky still think they cant see utv cos its not on the epg)

Yes, using the details as above it can be added in non-freesat mode. (Presuming it's a Humax Freesat box)

PQ is awful on it, showing an old hurling game now, Kilkenny & Waterford, with a TG4 banner. http://www.msk.ie/ is under construction at the minute

Its there alright. Def available on Humax Freesat box in non-freesat mode

You dont have to subcsribe to Sky in the first instance to get FTA channels. Any FTA satelitte box will pick up these channels. Not everyone pays Sky to watch the freesat and fta channels (and these numbers are going up as people discover that).

This MSK channel is a dump channel for what is remaining of Setanta's sports rights. Thats all. And Sky is the carrier, its encryption has been dropped at present probably because the quality is so awful and the content is old recordings. They might have just stuck up a placeholder with dummy epg data. And when they do start broadcasting live content like the GAA championship, they will turn the encryption on.

That's how the rights were sold. Complain to the GAA.

I would laugh if RTÉ did complain about another broadcaster showing GAA FTA on satellite. Wasn't it Setanta that forced RTÉ to block GAA games when RTÉ first went on satellite?

Having tuned in MSK and it is literally the worst picture quality I have ever seen on satellite. If they do plan on charging for this they are doomed for UK failure yet again.

    mmmmmmm
Setanta has secured the rights to screen GAA matches for the coming season in Canada, Asia, Australia and Africa. The rights for the US market have been acquired by the Premium Sport Pub and Club Network, a consortium of local US regional broadcasters.
Thats all the continents stiched up except europe.
Does that mean Europe is considered OUTSIDE the remit of the Setanta reincarnation?
And does that mean that RTE will stop their messin by blocking watching GAA online in Europe seeing as theres nobody that is loosing out by RTE broadcasting to Europe?

It means that there probably isnt a significant market outside the UK within Europe. Not that Astra 28.2 doesnt get into Europe either way!

RTE could still block it if it chose to which I imagine they will. You do know that MSK WILL be encrypted being in the business of making money ! If its free online why would anyone subscribe ! In America and UK!

RTE have actually lifted the online geoblock on home produced content anyhow.

It's not up to RTÉ if they can show it in Europe or not. They bought rights for the island of Ireland. The Sunday game is usually available worldwide on the following Wednesday though

out of interest does anyone know or even hazard a ballpark figure how much these "rights" would cost in the uk? hardly more than a million pounds a year I would guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

It will be subscription after the trail period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 ricardoo3

So what do members in the UK see as a fair charge for this service given it is probably going to start charging in a couple of weeks time? Seems to be focusing on GAA and NRL and probably some pre-season soccer (celtic, man U etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 ricardoo3

What would members in the UK think would be a fair price to pay for GAA coverage (also NFL) and no doubt some pre-season soccer friendlies (Celtic Man U etc) when this channel goes PPV in the near future?

They should stay FTA. I think it will be very hard to be a Pay service unless they plan to be a basic pay satellite/cable service such as The Discovery Channel or The UKTV set of channels. Or like Setanta Ireland on UPC.

PremierSports (MSK) is going subscription on 6th August, £6.99 p/m.

Can't see this working once the Championship is over.

A daft Idea to charge, with next to useless programmes on their schedules. If they think Irish ex-pats will go for this offer in their droves, they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I cannot see their subscription service lasting long either. They don't have much Sport at all, they are with the Fairies if they think that they will sign up a lot of subscribers from October onwards. It is a terrible marketing ploy for them to go pay tv and their so called MPEG2 broadcast quality picture is still very poor. :D

I don't think they expect a lot of subscribers. How could they?
