There is nothing to indicate it does mpeg4, in which case it will be UK Freeview only. Maybe that's all you want for that room? Why not go for another Picnic though?

somewhet relevant and i didnt want to start a new thread on it,
but is there a thread for freeview boxes that DO work with irish DTT?

there is one for tellys but didnt see one for set top boxes

I'm already down 40 squids on a phillips freeview box for the parents that wont do Irish services.

Unless they have Saorview logo certification at this stage, avoid.

I expect they plan HD in a few years (and it will take a few years for Soarview / Irish DTT to get off the ground). You'll want a box that does HDMI and HD as well as SCART + SD MPEG4.

Rule of thumb in general: Freeview branded Boxes NOT suitable for Irish DTT. Freeview is still MPEG2 for SD so a lot of those dirt cheap boxes are still on the market (the lack of a HDMI normally gives it away).

Some Freeview HD boxes may be suitable, but given previous UK DBook short cuts this is not a given.

For 45 Euro you will get a Sigmatek HD520. It will do both the SD Freeview and Irish DTT off an aerial (if you can receive both where you are).

    Hey was that watty ?

Thanks for that! Where can I get one for that money? Did a quick search and I can only find them on amazon for £70+ ??

Any other cheap box that would do the Irish and UK?

They are €47 now. You need to find out how much the delivery is from France (the mad thing is that this crowd have a huge warehouse in Dundalk - but the .ie website is not working yet and the sigmatek is not on the uk version).

By the way that box will let you record to a pen drive or USB drive and also plays AVI or MKV media files (ie films etc) via a USB drive (lots buy it for the mkv functionality alone).

This is the cheapest out there

In case they won't deliver here - or the cost is excessive, that is also on pixmania

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/4258890/art/sigmatek/dvbr-520-hd-digital-tv-re.html

    slightly more expensive + delivery.

    Hi guys,

Apologies for my lack of knowledge regarding this topic.
My Brother recently bought a Hitachi HDR 163 from england thinking that it would work here in Ireland. So far I have figured out that the box probaby won't work here in Ireland due to the encoding differences. Is this correct and if so, is there any way that I could buy a convertor or something like that to enable it to be used here in Ireland.
Thanks in advance for your help with this!!
    And again forgive my ignorance!
