Are these broadband to go USB devices worth having for the odd occasion that you might find the need for one? or, are they a total rip off & gimmick?

I don't have one myself, but know people who do. Most companies do a free trial option these days; as coverage can vary if your not in a city, I'd recommend this (free trial). I think you get about 7Mbps connections atm. The prepay ones are handy for the 'need it the odd time' scenario. Check T&C's for charging rates, e.g. €/MB

Yea I'm sure they could be handy in certain situations?

My understanding is that Meteor (on offer at the moment) offer the hawaii 180 modem (7Mbps capable) for €19.99 and the hawaii E 182E modem (14Mbps capable) for €29.99

A Day pass costs €2.99 for 500MB & runs from midnight to midnight.

A Month pass costs €19.99 for 7.50GB & runs for month.

Like mobiles, it has to be topped up at least once every six months to keep the number activated.

That would be grand for surfing & email (without too many attachments) I'd imagine, if one had no other alternative.

I DOUBT if you d get more than 1meg/per sec speed if theres other people on the network, but usb modems ok for casual web browsing.IF you have a phone line , get a standard router with wifi, and you can run 3 pcs, laptops on it.For 30 euros approx.I think O2,OR 3 have ten gig browsing limits, last time i checked.

Don't be fooled by the 14.4mb/s modem.

Never in a million years will we see those kinds of speeds for an individual on a mobile network.

You'll be lucky to get a solid 400KB, peaking around 1.5mb the odd time.

I understand what you are all saying regarding speeds but It's moving slightly off topic in so far as the original question goes.

I would never dream of using it as my main source of Broadband, I'm only thinking of the odd time I might be somewhere that has no Broadband available so I could use it on my laptop or netbook if needed. I suppose a once off payment of 20-30 bucks and a day pass when needed wouldn't break the bank? Might be handy to throw in the laptop bag?

Do you know if the SIM operates like a normal phone SIM, by that I mean, could you top it up by let's say €5\€10 & buy the day pass using that and still leave money on the SIM? (from what I gather it has the option on the broadband landing screen which lets you use the text function to buy a day or month pass by entering the number you got when credit was purchased)

Yeah, buy credit, for a day or 1 week ,its ok.
Its not a ripoff, you might get 900k/per sec speed .Its ok for casual use.
Make sure the service is avaidable if you are living in the country side.
Look on the website 4 coverage maps.
IF you buy a day pass ,or a week, you have only 1day,or 1week to use it in, from the time you put in the credit pin code.
Theres no such thing as left over credit.
I cannot see anyone actually achieving 14meg speed on those modems.

Am I right when I say that you buy the credit for these just as you would for a pay as you go phone? Any top up shop?

So let's say you buy €10 credit and a day pass costs €2.99 how to you top up the modem?

Do you use the modems landing page to buy a day pass & key in the number from the €10 top up slip, it deducts €2.99 from the €10 and you can use the same top up number until the balance is used up? or, how does it work?

I don't have one, but there's a guide here, but it only mentions the day pass in er, passing. 30 day pass is a menu item on their software. I think you top-up same as normal mobile, then buy passes with your credit. They do a 7day trial.
