    Hi,

I have a few old valve radios 1950s Does anyone know where i can get them repaired. There was a guy years ago in Mother Redcaps market in City centre who was great and then a repair shop on south Circular road ..now gone.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

It's at least €50 to €100 a radio unless you find someone doing it for fun. That is actually cheap when you consider the time and expertise.

    I know someone in Limerick.

When a pint was a few Shillings and TVs & Radios so expensive compared to wages, that people rented them, then it was economical to run a repair shop. A DVD player now is €30. That wouldn't pay to open the case. Video recorders when they came out would be equivalent of €2,000 or more in today's money.

    Those were the days!
I worked with valve stuff in the 60s but as the 70's came in a lot of valves became hard to get.
Nowadays if a valve is required then 'cannibalism' with a splash of trial and error is the best option. Anything other fault should be relatively easy...
...if you can find a suitable person.

If you feel adventurous take the backs off and switch on. If a valve has no orange glow but in another set it does try swapping after switching off & disconnecting.. [Make sure they are identical/equivalent types. http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/ may be of use in that respect.]

Almost all the valves are available. Even many back to 1930s.
