Can it be done? I followed the guide in the android sticky but it appears my firmware must be patched. Has anyone managed to root their hero bought from Meteor?

    Current firmware 1.5
    Build 2.73.405.66 CL#83173 release keys

I have tried most things including goldcard (3 different cards) and have had no success whatsoever. The goldcard methd ends each time with a non-formated sd card - so this is probably not due to any patch. Please advise if you have had any more prog

I followed a similar guide to that from unlockr yesterday, which didn't work for me. I had ROM 2.73.405.5

Then I found this guide which worked a treat and seems to get around the patch. The only difference I can see is that the recovery image has been updated.

Why don't you give it a try, a lot simpler than goldcard route;)

Attempted to root the other day and ran into a problem with HTC sync. I'm running 2.73.405.66 and got the "backup failed" message but I was unable to downgrade as Sync will not recognise my phone for some reason. Laptop is Vista 32 bit and i'm using the administrator settings while attempting to sync. I downloaded the latest sync version from the htc website and i have the USB debugging checkbox ticked on the hero. (Actually, when checking and unchecking this box the computer knows the phone is connected but the sync program still won't connect). Anyone got any ideas as i'd really prefer not to have to use the goldcard method!

I have also tried to downgrade from .66 and failed. I will try again soon and report on what messages I get. gluck4now

I got it downgraded and the flashrec process seemed to work. However when I did a restart with home button pressed I just get a warning triangle and frozen screen. How do I know if I have rooted it.?

So I take it you guys had no problem with HTC Sync when downgrading? I'll have to give it another go, might try loading sync on another computer!

I have finally loaded new rom android 2.1. Hero now thinks it is a Legend but it all works beautifully. The google navigator thing is amazing but it eats battery. You have to have it powered up from the car for it to last more than 2 hours. GPS has a bug that you have to turn GPS on and then power the phone up before it will twig its position. otherewise everything works and its fairly quick. I can recommend.
