So my sister posted up an ad on gumtree and long story short she got scammed!

She posted an ad up on gumtree selling her olympus camera (quite a good one!) and someone with the shows interest in her cam.. after a reply from my sister he emails her:

    hello there,
thank you for the fast reply.
i am willing to proceed with the transaction now and pay you 400€ which include p&p.kindly login to your paypal account and select the request money button located at the top of your paypal account homepage and send the money request directly to my paypal account id which is markeydamien@yahoo.co.uk so that i can submit payment to you via paypal right now as paypal is safe, fast and easy to send and receive money online.

If you dont have a paypal account just logon to www.paypal.com and set up your paypal account, after setting up your paypal account you locate the request money button located at the top of your paypal account home page, use it to request money directly from my paypal account which is markeydamien@yahoo.co.uk once I receive your money request from paypal, I will submit payment to you immediately via paypal asap.

    Get back asap.
    Damien Markey .....

And a he also said it was a surprise birthday present to his son in africa or something like that..

And my sister being an extreme sweetheart, having never done any transactions online didn't find anything suspicious about the email, so goes along with it. after a few days (ie today) she posted the camera to the address he gave her. Later on in the day, her boyfriend finds out that this was all a scam. blah blah. now my sister is in the police station trying to sort it out...

Do you think there's any chance in getting the camera back?? Seeing as she posted it today?? She sent it via "ROYAL MAIL INTERNATIONAL". :(

This really should have sent alarm bells ringing. I dont think she should hold out much hope.

At what stage is the paypal payment? Did she send it on before she got notification that the money had hit her account. Once the guy started taking control of the transaction, and directing YOU (the seller) what to do, it's usually a sign you are dealing with a chancer. When I'm selling something I usually deliberately try to throw a few curveballs, to see how they react.

Might be just something that she has to write up to experience.

Not a chance of getting it back.

Just google the first few lines of the email.

http://blog.gumtree.com/paypal-scam-alert/ is gumtrees own explaination of the scam, there are other variations including the seller recieving fake emails from PayPal say the money is their account which it isn't.

    Sorry for the bad news.

Edit> Same scammers email address and email quoted here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=16405094

well she was using her boyfriends paypal account and i think it's to where it's "requested payment" or watever.. like he's "paid" or something.. duno. Apparently the cam is still in ireland (coz of some airline transport issue) so there may be a chance in getting it back. :)

If it's been posted then she can't get the parcel back once it's sent as it's now the property of the royal mail until it reaches it's destination.

You have no chance of getting the camera back, you can't recall a package once it's been posted.

If the payment has been received, it'll be from a stolen card, and will be withdrawn from the account soon.
