Not to be answering on behalf of the OP, but given recent events over there I think it's at least a valid question to pose!

    From the UK Travel Advisory:

we currently advise against all travel to some specific areas of Thailand and all but essential travel to other specific areas of Thailand.

I have no specific knowledge myself, but anecdotal evidence from a friend who has recently (last few days) been in Bangkok, he felt fairly unsafe and got out of there as quick as he could. Obviously I'm sure this would be different coming from someone who knew the city and could judge the safe places to go.
These things can change quickly, but I'd say keep an eye on local English language news sources if you're thinking of going in the near future.

That's the important bit. Bangkok is a huge city and the trouble is concentrated in a relatively small area. Unfortunately that area has a lot of the better hotels and major shopping malls so it would be on the tourist trail. It would also be easy to stray into it using public transport as the skytrain and Metro both pass through the area. Outside Bangkok, Southern Thailand has always been somewhat volatile near the Malaysian border.

For your average backpacker who arrives in Khao San Road, spends a day or two and moves on north or to the islands there would be no sign of trouble probably.

Thailand is generally a very safe place to travel - the main safety issues are more to do with traveller stupidity than anything else.

The Irish Embassy in Thailand are advising against all but essential travel to Bangkok at the moment. There is a state of emergency there at the moment and the Redshirts are really having a showdown with the Government, Myself and some friends were going to do Bangkok as part of a RTW in July but have instead opted for Singapore due to the unrest.

A series of grenade attacks killed three people there today and wounded 75 including 4 foreigners.

From my reading of the political situation the country is divided between between the pro and the anti Shinawtra camps along a Right/Left political axis which is also geographically divided. Things there will get worse before they get better and the Country could be about to slide into Civil conflict if not all out Civil War.

Best give things a chance to cool down before visiting I think!

I'm just back from my first visit to Thailand and I would have to say it seems pretty safe. Of course, you need to have your wits about you, just like travelling to any country.

In relation to the Red Shirts in Bangkok - the media over here seems to be over hyping the situation. Yes, there have been grenades attacks and it did spill onto the Khao San Road - why tourists want to visit that road is beyond me - but none the less, it's one small area of Bangkok (relative to the size of Bangkok of course!)

I was stranded in Bangkok for 10 days because of the Volcanic ash and went to many places close to where the Red Shirts camped out and didn't see an ounce of trouble. I did venture up to them one night with a few friends and we were given nothing but a warm welcome!

If the situation worsens, I'd be concerned - but it seems to be very sporadic at the moment and in isolated areas. So if you know where they are, you can easily avoid them altogether.
