Alfa 159 1.8l petrol fuel consumption?

Hey, recently bought an Alfa 159 with a 1.8l petrol engine. Fuel consumption should be about 7.6 L/100 km according to wikipedia. I know it can vary, but mine is up just under 10! And that's even when I'm being gentle with the throttle.

Has anyone else got one to give me a real-world comparison? Is this about right or should I be looking for a problem.

Already topped up the tire-pressures, which were way down on what they should be. So much for pre-sale services... Improved it from about 10.5 to where it is now.

That does seem pretty high. Have no experience with the alfa, but i have a 1.8petrol and easily acheive 7.3L/100km and better if i'm boring. Looking at parkers, the wiki is about right for average fuel consumption (http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/summary.aspx?model=1468&page=3). The average for my car is pretty much spot on aswell.

Is it all stop start city driving, all motorway driving, or a bit of both?

Most people will struggle to get anywhere near the published combined figure with normal day to day driving.

Hello.. yeah your car is a bit heavy alright...

My AR 2.2JTS is returning ~23MPG (12.2l/100km) and your your car is now around 28.2MPG .... (I'm converting to MPG here for my own brain)...

I drove a 1.8 159 for a week last year and I though (from memory) it was around 34MPG (8.3l/100km) combined..... I do more non-city driving though... I wonder if you have a dud sensor there somewhere....

How many miles are on your car? If there are more than 60k you might have a dirty AirFlowMeter etc....

    Cheers,

Personally I think the 1.8 is a small engine for a 159. Personally the best engines for the 159 are the 2.4 JTD and 3.2 v6, and the new one 1750 TBi.

Anyway if you can hook it up to alfadiag it should give some idea where to start ;);)

It's only got 12k miles on it... about 50/50 carriageway and town driving. So there's something not quite right.

Yeah I wonder is it just the reading is wrong... I notice that even when coasting downhill it's showing 2 li/100km. That can't be right can it? And if I put the clutch in the consumption rreading rockets...

RobertM, can I get the alfadiag test done under warranty?

Or is that some software I can download and run myself?

Don't know about if it covers warranty work, but you can buy it online, the program and cable, and connect it to a laptop and it should give you some details, otherwise I have a person who is a Alfa Romeo specialist. He is from Tipperary but travels to Dublin often, and he is a very helpful person, and he has something better than alfadiag. if you want his details give me a PM.

What you need to do first is fill her up and see the real mileage you are getting from a tank. The computer is inaccurate. You should be getting about 37mpg for mixed driving. Do that and then you can see if there is an issue.

What is the car like besides that? Was thinking of one myself.

Apart from that I love it... even had a Garda at a checkpoint telling me it's a gorgeous car today! As said earlier the 1.8 isn't going to give race-car performance, but there's plenty of grunt for me and seems good range to the torque. Also all my research said there are no major reliability issues with the 159.

And second hand they're a steal.

Thanks Robert, I'll see how I go myself first.

No bother then. Just enjoy her :D Would upgrade to a 159 if I had the money, only on 156 now.
