hi guys, got some work done on my e39 recently and was told that i need the following done also:
Elctric fan is faulty and needs replacing
Left and Right Rear Stub Axle Bushes and Integral links are worn, so need replacing
Xenon Bulb or sensor not wrking (they needed a new bulb to check which it was)

i was told that these for parts alone would cost over 400 euro. can these be sought for cheaper than this? so i could provide a mechanic with them and just get him to install the items, thus only paying for the labour?
    thanks

    A) That doesnt sound expensive at all and B) Why not ask some Independent mechanics for their labour cost if you supply parts?

Whats the Xenon Bulb "or Sensor" about? Whats the actual problem?

................Left and Right Rear Stub Axle Bushes and Integral links are worn, so need replacing......................

These need a special tool to replace, so you'll save time and money by going to a specialist.

I'd agree, it sounds about right for just the parts. The xenon problem might end up costing you more if you need a new ballast. Although it sounds like theres a problem with the auto-levelling (i assume the E39 has this?).

When you say electric fan, do you mean the internal blower motor for the cabin?

    hi all,
re: the electric fan, its a back up fan to stop the car over heating is what i was told. and the Xenon lights problem is that it sometimes turns off and i get the warning on the dash, yet most of the time its okay. Re: Rear Stub Axle Bushes and Integral links needing a specialist tool, will most mechanics have this ?
also any recomendations on where these items can be sourced ?

OR am i better off going to a specialist and getting everything done and just save the few bob that its going to cost?
    THanks

    What backup fan?
There is a viscous coupling controlling the speed of the rad fan, an electric air con fan and then the main heater blower. Prices are quite different for each.

I'd doubt it - this is it here, not a lot of people will fork out for one of these unless they can justify the cost. The best thing is to ring around - the likes of AC Car Sales in Dublin would be able to accomodate you.

excuse the ignorance mate, hence i go to mechanics, but what the lad said to me was that' theres a back up electric fan that is used and yours is faulty, but you'll be alright once your car doesnt start to over heat from sitting in traffick or using the air con'. As i say, i aint got a notion to be honest :(

At a guess, I'd say the viscous coupling has gone.

The pusher / aircon fan will come on if the coolant goes over a certain temperature i.e. it works as a backup.

Are you sure it doesn't work? To test I think it needs to be over 15 celcius or somesuch, you would need to look that up. Basically:

    o Warm engine up.
o Close all doors/windows, turn heat to max, blower to max.
o Roast yourself for about 30 seconds.
o Hit the "max" button to turn the aircon on full.
o Get out of car, close door and get to front of car quick.
o Look at electric fan on front of radiator, it may only spin for a short while.
