Sky Digital - Phone Line Required??

Getting Sky + HD Installed with Multi-Room and have been told by Sky that I need an active phoneline. I've just bought the house and have no idea if there is an active line.

I've been told Eircom charge €25 a month for line rental (we don't want a house phone so line itself is only required for Sky).

Is there no cheaper way of doing it?? €25 seems alot for nothing! Sorry if this is in the wrong place!

    Thanks.

A phone is required for Sky multi-room. Amongst other things It's to check both boxes are on the same phone line and therefore in the same house, this stops people from having one box in house A and having the second box in house B .

Depending on your needs for the 2nd box you don't need to go with Sky, you could get a freesat box. You can use the Sky dish providing it has an quad LNB can feed both the Sky and Freesat boxes. You don't need a phone line for none multi-room but there may be a 30 euro charge by the installation engineer .

Checkout freesat.co.uk for what available on freesat

You could also wait and see what the new and due to start soon Sat TV Service "Real Digital" can provide ... see my thread " http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055886107 "

Anytime i asked sky about this i got same answer ''Sorry you MUST have a phoneline connected to the box at all times  ''

I got same **** when i got sky hd with multiroom meself had to move everything downstairs cause no workin line in me room.

Unless u wanna go see how much upc are charging then theres no way around it.

Although saying that i do remember when i first moved house i had no phone line and sky said ok pay us i think it was 20 30 euro something like that and we will forget about the phoneline.
The sky box in front room nearly 4 years later has never been connected threw the phone :p
They can wave this stupid rule if they really want to.

Why not get Sky HD in the main room, distribute the picture around the house and put Freesat boxes in the other rooms. Best of both worlds and no multiroon or phone line costs.

alternatively have a local installer order the 2 cards and activate them remotely then install them in your house, not by the book but fudge sky and all they stand for!

Any dealer/installer who does that isn't worth dealing with. You'd also have to pay for 2 full subs which would be just as expensive if not more so.

What Sky stand for is a matter of opinion..

If the OP wants a multi-room digital satellite set-up without a phone line , then Sky as the main box + Freesat for 2nd or 3rd rooms is a good option. The OP can then compare the service they are getting from Sky and freesat and dump sky a year down the road if they so wish.

Also I didn't mention it earlier , there is no RTE on Freesat
