    Hi,

I recently bought a pair of Shimano R-160 shoes online. These have the so-called "custom" heat-mouldable inserts and heel cup. The idea is that you pop them in the oven then put them on and they become moulded to the shape of your feet. Shimano are quite clear that this process should only be done by a Shimano dealer and they provide no instructions on how to do it.

It's not a huge deal because I didn't buy the shoes because of this feature - I like Shimano shoes in general, know that their size 41 fits perfectly and these were a bargain. I'm still curious to try it out though.
Has anyone ever done this at home?

    Cheers

The heat molding is done by placing the shoes in a preheated oven at 100 degrees Celsius for 3 minutes one at the time.
The insoles are moldable as well and will be placed in the oven for one minute before you do the shoes. The hot soles go in the shoe and you will have to take on the shoes and stand up with them for about 5 minutes until the soles are cooled down.
There is a small kit of shims with the shoes that you can place under the soles to make them follow the arch of your foot or toes better if needed afterwards.
After the soles are done the shoes (without the soles) will go in the preheated oven for 3 minutes. You take on the warm shoe and put your foot in a bag that will be sucked vacuum with a little compressor. The pressure of the vacuum bag will press the shoes around your feet and once cooled off they stay in this shape and make for a snug fit.
According to Shimano you can re-mold the shoes 4 times without the shoe getting weaker and up to 8 times without any problems, after that the moldable parts of the shoe will begin to loose their resistance. This is not a problem though as you will probably only mold the shoes once, small adjustments in fit can easily be done at home by heating up a small spot with a hair dryer and reshaping it with your hands.
