Seriously, in this day and age why are people getting away with making such ridiculous claims like this? Islam is not alone there are a number of similar claims made by Christian speakers too.

This is the year 2010, not 210, when such ridiculous claims are being made they should be immediately shot down otherwise stupid and influenceable people are going to continue to believe them!

I was WONDERING who was behind the recent increase in seismic activity in Asia Minor...

Makes perfect sense if you ask me;)

Promiscuous Women? I though it was the homosexuals' fault! I just can't keep up with these clerics and all their madness!

There is a serious point here though. While it remains half-funny for people in Ireland, I imagine there are lots of people literally trapped in that kind of culture. I read the book The Color Purple recently, about a black woman's struggle to break out of the racist and sexist culture she was born into in the Deep South in the '20s. I could easily imagine the same thing playing out in these places; women being tormented by the culture and government of extremist Islamic countries and seeing no hope in the future.

    1. Wear revealing clothing
    2. Lead young men astray
    3. ????
    4. Earthquakes

I said it before, I'll say it again, religion is dumb. :pac:

Unfortunately the pronunciations of this cleric are hardly any worse than those of senior Italian clergy blaming paedophilia on Jews and Homosexuals....

Exactly, why can't someone take a stand worldwide and condone this type of crazy behavior? Are politicians just afraid of the backlash of criticising religion no matter how crazy it is?

Yes well we all know that but that isn't a very strong argument and it gets nowhere. A more targeted attack on ridiculous statements like these could possibly have some positive effect on minimising such occurrences.

Thats fair enough but if you think this is about religion you are blind, the purpose of this little article is to paint Iran in bad light. SKY, FOX and the BBC have been doing it for a couple of years..... the reason is obvious---- spend a few years blackening a country and its easier for the public to let a little invasioning happen ;)

This guy is the ACTING FRIDAY PRAYERS minister in tehran, the equivilant of a parish priest. And by the looks of it as crazy as most parish priests preaching their hokus pokus everyweekend in churches up and down this country :D

    All of history suggests otherwise.

Religion has had thousands of years to come up with ironclad forms of defense against criticism. The more you attack such proclamations the more the people making them feel they are having influence.

Ridicule and ignoring them is the best medicine. Trying to argue on a rational level simply gives oxygen to the view point.

You forget that Iran is the one nation on this planet free of homosexuals, at least according to their president.

Slutty women are the new gays

the purpose of this little article is to paint Iran in bad light.

Because it takes so much spin to turn the quote "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes" into something ridiculous.

    The story speaks for itself!

Got to love the right to free speech, you can say just about anything :D

After getting him (this cleric) drunk last night in a strip club & filling his head full of nonsense, are his mates having a good laugh at him now?

I think in the case of criticising Islam they're understandably afraid of getting a bullet in the chest or a bomb through their letterbox.

It's a fukking disgrace if you ask me. Free speech my arse. We need more people like this guy.

Some people will blame women for anything, but a "promiscuous woman" cant be promiscuous on her own ;)

It just goes to show what some Iranian clerics now about seismic activity, thats nothing at all, just in case some specific Iranian clerics are reading this.

    Agreed!

Stuff like this has been happening in Ireland for years and is still happening heard last week that a doctor wont give a "miracle" fertility treatment to couples in Ireland that arent married, stone age or what!

Its not really any more ridiculous than most religious claims.

He's effectively going with Karma Islam style.

Sorry OP you really don't need to be saving anyone on boards from swallowing this clerics explanation IMO. Basically threads like this just serve to promote the trend of headline dissemination of information.

    ..and this is why.

Soon anything any religious leader or cleric says is treated the same, see above.

    (a) Italian clergy blaming paedophilia on Jews - IIRC the originator of this was a posting on a blog which claimed quotes from a retired elderly bishop who claimed to have never heard of the blogger, never given them an interview and never said the things credited to him. From the blog it gets picked up and reported and rereported as fact, when in all probability it began as complete fiction. I could write a blog tomorrow and claim Brian Cowen told me that Roy Keane was to blame for the shenanigans at Anglo.

    (b) the Cardinal who 'blamed paedophilia on Homosexuals' did no such thing. He said the problem of clerical abuse was not so much a problem of paedophilia as it was a problem of pederasty. Research fully supports him in this. A tiny fraction of worldwide clerical abuse is actually paedophilia. The cardinal was being technical and completely truthful.

He must be taking advice from Cardinal Bertiloni...

Cleric : The Catholics are blaming the gays for their problems, damn it, why didn't I think of it first!

Advisor: Sir, there are plenty of other groups we can target.

    Cleric : Like?

    Advisor: Women. Especially promiscuous ones.

Cleric: I like it, make it so. Warp 9.

Partially. Afraid of losing votes locally, would be much of it. Alienating and further dividing people in multicultural areas that may then go nuts on the back of that. Look at what happened in France with the riots there. The main religion they're afraid of criticising is Islam. Don't want to further inflame relations with the middle east, in particular SA. Plus it can simply be dangerous. Print a tee shirt with "Buddha is a bollex" and its very unlikely much will happen to you. Do similar with the abrahamic faiths, in particular Islam and good luck...

Yea I would agree with a lot of that. It's probably not even conscious but Islam is the whipping boy at the moment. That said its one of the easiest targets of the current crop of faiths. At least its nutter element is and its nutter element are in positions of influence and power.

I would also agree with prinz. Too often chinese whispers and disinformation ride in on the coattails of the whipping boy.

This cleric comes out with this guff and I would put good money most of his flock would have been thinking wtf? Iranians are one of the more sophisticated, educated (and rebellious) peoples of the middle east. The president might be a goon and there are enough mad mullahs to go around(and some pretty sensible ones too, who dont get the column inches of course), but you cant paint the nation with the same brush.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
