    Hi,

Should probably know this but can't find the info anywhere. I assume it depends on the course, but am I right in thinking for all science courses it is the case that your results do not count towards your degree, but do count towards your work placement ?

    Thanks !

What course are you doing? as you said it depends on the course i'd say but I dont know of any courses that count first year. In terms of counting for your placement, well yes in that companies will be looking at your CV and you'll only have 1st and 2nd yr results by that stage so it'll be a good indicator, but no more than that.

Just cos they dont count doesnt mean you should try any less hard than if they did, as exams generally get harder each year you progress so first year is a good chance to get some good results.

as sam said, it depends on the course. i know certainly for medicine they can count.

the system they have is a dual honours system - mode A and mode B.

Mode A honours is the traditional - get an honour in your final year

if you do not achieve an honour in final year, you can apply for mode B honours which takes account the average over the 5 years.

I'm not sure if other departments apply a similar system, your best bet would be to drop an email to your departmental secretary, you'll get the info for sure then.

It gives all the information here.

Edit: Yes you're right, first year doesn't count towards your final year marks

You know you're gonna do better than the lot of us anyway :P

But yeah, I'm pretty sure first year results don't count... It's only the lecturers opinions I'd be worried about and we prolly won't have most of them next year anyway. Though we'll be getting letters of recommendation and such like off them for placement, so it is important in a way.
