ok, just bought a 98 406 Coupe last night........and i am thrilled with it :D

One question though: what is the dial on the left hand side with min-max? beside the rev dial?

I think that the small dials display

    Oil Temp
    Water Temp
    Fuel guage

I kind of remember my 406 saloon having an oil level gauge in that spot - have a look in the handbook.

this is the only pic i can get at the moment, its on the far left.....it could be water temp, but it seems odd with MIN to MAX

    Sounds like a oil guage?

You dont have the 2.0l turbo with a turbo guage maybe?

no, the oil temp is on the other side, but it is where the oil temp is on that picture.
i cant find an image on the net of it anywhere. would anyone know where i might find a diagram of the counters?

i'm pretty sure its not a turbo, its a 2.0L.

My own 406 is long gone, but the more I think about it the more I think it's an oil level gauge. Try turning on the ignition without starting the engine, see what it does.

but it has an OFF position, then it starts at MIN to MAX, and thats all it has. Its has done nothing while i have been driving it.
Yes i could have asked when i bought it, but only really noticed it when driving home. I'm just curious, as i have never seen one like it before.
i'm still hunting to see if i can find some info, or a dash diagram or something that might shed some light.

Sounds about right, the oil level in that engine can only be checked while it's not running.

ok, it sounds a bit odd, i'll check to see if it moves when the key is turned at lunchtime.
seems odd though, why would you need a dial on the dash, when you can check it at the dip stick?

Laziness, clean hands etc. Come to think of it, my 406 had a pair of OEM gloves in the toolkit too.:)

i forgot to report back, i checked in out more at lunchtime.

yes it seems to be the oil level gauge, it only goes up when the the key in turned but engine not on.
I suppose its handy in a way, now i can check the oil levels everyday from the comfort of inside my car
