Due to the high cost of replacing an Iphone everyone recommends that you get insurance but after reading a lot of the posts on here it seem that the insurance companies very seldom pay out regardless of the problem as their small print section covers more that it exclueds
So should i not pay for insurance and hope nothing happens or pay for the insurance and hope nothing happens ?

Its definitely worth it. I got mine wet and they replaced it in a few days no problem. 9 quid a month you barely notice, but you'll certainly feel 500 quid when you need to buy a new one. My mate dropped his, it worked fine but there was a chip in the plastic and the volume buttons did not work. he sent it back for repair and they sent him a new one.

I'm not over the moon about the insurance set up with o2. They never flagged to mw when I was signing up that if I didn't take the insurance there and then and if I subsequently opted for it,I would have to pay the premium for two months without cover before I would be covered.

Regardless, i think I'll go for it!

Out of curiousity, how much is the insurance with O2?

Check out your home insurance - if you put it in as a specified all risks item. You should obtain most covers such as theft etc. without being hit by an excess (mine does not charge an excess). It won't cover faulty goods though but should work out alot cheaper.
