Are there any reported problems with the "Slim" ?

I've read all about the various situations with the Xbox 360 and the PS3 involving these lights and rings of death.

Have all and (hopefully) any issues, design and manufacturing flaws etc. been ironed out with this PS3 slim or are they intentially built in like with the other two aforementioned consoles?

I used to have a PS2 that lasted the guts of 10years which was pleasant. Not as pleasant as the 20+ the Mega Drive has put in put lets not split hairs.

A friend of mine works in Sonys customer support and said there is a lot fewer complaints (ylod, discs not reading etc..) with the slim than the 'fat' ps3 but there will never be a 0% failure rate

What are you basing this assumption on???

Only problem I can report is the deluge of massive games in the last few months taking all my time and I've a sore ear from the wife's complaining ;)

But then - this problem has been built in to all PS3s since day 1. Just took a while for it to surface :D

I'm guessing the dreaded disc read error that plagued the PS2 and the worn out plastic drives that plagued the PS1. When it comes to console build quality Sony haven't been the best. However The PS3 seems to be really well made and the Slim line uses a processor that generates less heat and uses less power meaning any overheating problems that some of the older consoles had should not be a problem as long as you look after the console.

    Yeah but, intentional???

Perhaps intentional was a bit over-zealous. Though I've read so many internet threads on both the yellow light of death/blue ray issue with teh Playstation 3 together with problems with other consoles and it just makes you wonder....

Have you ever put your hand on the top of the slim after using it for an hour or 2?? It's gets red hot. I upgraded from a fat to a slim recently and the heat does worry me a bit

My slim doesn't get that hot at all, maybe it's just yours, but the top of my fat from the moment you turn it on is like the surface of the sun.

Just streaming a movie to my fat now. Checked the top of it there and it's fairly cold. There's heat coming from elsewhere but, not overly so!

When you say top do you mean lying down top or standing up top?, coz I mean standing up top, the part with all the holes.
The back of my slim is where the heat comes out not so much the top(either)

Do you have it tucked away in some wooden tv cabinet, if so.........there's your problem...

Lying down top ;) I was bloody wondering!!! I don't think the fans are overly hot, I'll check at another time!

Nope it's out in the open with plenty space for the heat to disperse but when I put my hand on the ps3 about 3 inches behind the indented logo it's quite hot. Mayb it's just the plastic and the heat is escaping which would b a good thing

Hmm, my PS3 Slim has started crashing/stalling. A game will just freeze up and I'll have to restart the console by holding down the On/Off button. Happens on a good few different games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Ok just thought I'd post this for anybody who has the same concern that I did about the heat coming from the back and the underside of the slim. I noticed last that that my slim which is sitting on top of a sky+ box was almost boiling underneath which worried me. So today I went to woodies and got 4 ruber doorstops about an inch in height and diameter and put them underneath the slim. I'd say it should help with displacing the heat and help cooling. Not bad for €4. Just an idea though.;)

You do not put your PS3 on a fecking Sky Box.

Thats putting one hot thing on another FFS.

    Thats it....hold on a sec.............

Seriously, you have a choice between making space, and new PS3/SkyBox.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Yeah I mean, your ps3 is probably even hot when it is turned off because of the sky box - nevermind when they are both on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Ya that's my plan but for now my temporary solution is working but I know what your saying

    haha, love that.

My slim has been really nice, my bro uses the old 2+ year old fat, no difference besides abit more heat from the fat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

They are USB powered which means your ps3 would be powering them.

I honestly don't know if you could really say that the PS3 would be cooling more from the fan or be hotter as it has to provide additional power to keep the thing going.

What are your thoughts on just standing the console up in gereral?

    Hi

I had to return my first Slim and posted the information here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055747737

Good advice from all posters and cannot fault the customer service from Sony or Xtravision.

Not had an ounce of trouble since - which means that I've just jinxed it and it'll break in the morning!!!

I personally don't like doing it but it is purely my own preference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Ok then. Ok I have my ps3, sky box and home cinema sytem amp that I need to stack and I'm lookin for a small stand with 3 shelves no wider than a dvd player cause space is tight. If anybody comes across something suitable could they please post a link!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

If you get a chance then post a pic of your setup - I really find it hard to believe there isn't more you can do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭Butch Cassidy

I've got a PS2 Slim sitting on top of an Xbox, as in the first Xbox. I also had a PsOne sitting on top of the PS2. I've always stacked video machines/DVD players. Wouldn't do it with this generations fickle consoles that seem to break if you fart in the wrong direction at them!

First off, nice setup. Is that a Sammy TV? What series? I have a 32 inch series 5. Its cool and all but was kind of cheap and isn't the absolute best at blacks.

Couldn't you stick the ps3 where the remotes are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Thank you. Yes it's a sammy but only a series 4. It's quality tho so I'm happy with it. And plus it's my first hd tv and I'm a student so it'll do! You mean like this?

    DSC00514.JPG

I'm not too sure how the ventilation will be there. and it also has a wobble there for some reason!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Surely it would be better ventilation than the previous alternative?

Can you not inch it to the left a little to create more space for your right speaker (if needed)?

Kind of surreal having you rearrange your furniture over the net.

Also: Take down that Fallout 3 Bobblehead, place it in a cardboard box and mail it to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Ha stranger things have happened. Well I'm assuming it's better off sitting on wood than a sky box ya? But im not sure about ventilation space at the back

Not a chance! We have those collectors editions at work if you want one! And what about getting a vertical stand maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

If you can get a stand that you think would seperate the three units enought then go ahead. Not sure if plastic, metal or wood is the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

No I mean get a stand just so I can stand the ps3 vertically to the right of the tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Why bother? Doesn't look like it would do anything but block your screen a little.

What about a shelf unit where the GTA III poster is for the PS3? Couple of brackets and a piece of wood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭theShawzer

Ya that's not a bad idea. Only problem is the wall behind the gta 3 poster is a plaster wall so I assusme it wouldn't hold the weight. But to the left of that where the san andreas poster is, is a build in wardrobe. I'd say that might be strong enough maybe but I'm not sure. Any experiences with this?
