Sorry if this has been asked! We all have seen the pretty lame answer of the whispers but it was an answer, my question is why did Ben tell Danielle(?) that if she ever hears whispers to run the other way?

Because it most likely meant the smoke monster was coming......or something equally unpleasant.

My interpretation is that any time we heard the whispers it was the "lost souls" trying to warn the characters of imminent danger. This is why they often accompanied the arrival of the Others. I assume Ben knew this, so by telling Rousseau to run when she heard them, he was trying to keep her safe. This is probably how she survived so long.

One thing I've thought of. When Walt appeared to Shannon in Season two wasn't he accompanied by the whispers? But he obviously wasn't dead.
Maybe that was MIB or even Walt projecting himself somehow and it caused the ghost chorus to start their whispering?
