Bit of a utility back. But suppose Wing was where i was at my best. Ironically, I prefered full back!

2nd row for a while, stopped growing before everyone else and ended up being a prop.

    Scrum Half.

    Small, fast and good-looking.:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

Wing and inside centre. Played one match as flanker against Tralee. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭Risteard

I play Hooker, Flanker and occasionally Loosehead.

Made one embarrassing appearance on the wing before when we were short of players, never been as bored on a rugby pitch in my life.

Played open-side flanker. Just unfortunately dislocated my left shoulder two seasons in a row. That kinda ruined my playing.

Six, seven and eight - cushy numbers after being mangled in the front row and that was at schoolboy level. Ahh, yes I still miss the smell of stale jock straps, deep heat and a rugby ball that became heavier the wetter it got...way back in Old God's Time. :D

Winger then Fullback and then someone realised I wasn't actually very fast so moved me to inside centre.

Had my most fun when I played the occasional game as a flanker at high school.

hooker back in the day and the very odd day as flanker if short a few.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

Every single position. In the front row. Order of pref: 2, 3, 1.

Still playing, assuming I recover from this back injury :)

Started out back in school as a prop, kept me away from the ball as much as possible with the little amount of skill I had starting out :p, by third year I was in the back row, from then on stayed at 7 until college, finally ending up as scrum half/wing moonlighting at 7 in emergency situations.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 955 ✭✭✭sickpuppy

Started in the second row very tall at 12 at 15 had enough moved to the wing second center till 20.
12 year break and this year played second row prop:mad: for lifting purposes i hope:pac: and no 8 pending recovery from broken leg dislocated ankle may have to retire.

Started out at 2, but wound up at 8. Played 6 and 7 the odd time, and one game a 12. As a number eight, I scored a game winning last minute drop goal in a knock-out match. My claim to fame, though the coach wasn't to happy...

my coach said one rule in being a fatty. never kick the ball.

i remember hoofing the ball 50 metres along the touch line for a winger to score a try, next training session 5 laps of the pitch.

Yup, i got that too for a (successful) cross field kick right into the corner. I also attempted a drop goal in that same game, almost scored too. Got a bollocking from the coach.

And i used to play mostly loosehead, played a game or 2 at hooker but my throwing was appaling. Played a fair bit at 7 too.

8, nothing better than coming off the back of the scrum and seeing nothing but a delicate little 10 in front of you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭maherro

Tighthead. Havent played for 2 years due to knee injuries. Nothing better then destroying a loosehead on their put in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,772 ✭✭✭toomevara

    Loosehead, very, very badly...

I play frontrow, preferably loosehead but have played 2 and 3 regularly enough for my club. I've also played second row and blindside, but was somewhat out of place there as I was too heavy to lift in the lineout and too slow for the backrow.

Have played 1,3 and very rarely 4 & 5. Loose was the mainstay but the odd game at tight when we were short.

Was the 3rd choice placekicker for a while - interesting to watch the other teams reactions to a prop popping over penalties during warm up !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Was a backrow player. They usually stuck me where there was a gap so I played 6 and 7 mostly. Liked 6 most as I usually just took the ball and ran into people, could always make a few yards.

Stopped playing for a while [junior cert]. They played me on the wing as nothing else was available and then I stopped again for the Leaving Cert. Haven't played since. Want to but I am ridiculously unfit!

blindside and openside (at the same time, i was that good. jk) and the occasional game at 12 or 13. like someone previously mentioned about their shoulder, i did the same thing. tag only now :(

    Blindside.

Played against johnny sexton once in school :D

    Blindside.

Played against johnny sexton once in school :D

Number 8, and scrum half at minis.
    Number 7 at youths.
    Winger at J4.

scrum-half or out-half in rugby union.
Five-eighth, halfback or hooker in rugby league.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 317 ✭✭Jemo

Playing underage started out as a hooker, developed into a prop, mainly a tighthead but could play loosehead quite well then broke my collar bone when taking the ball into contact being upended by the two opposition props simultaneously with their weight coming down on my shoulder. Then lost most of my weight between the injury and leaving cert year and moved back to hooker in university. I was too small though so took a break to try and bulk up and get back into it next year.

Scrum half. I miss playing these days. Gonna take it up again this summer for next year.

I had a very brief stint at hooker in rugby league, only because I didn't realise it really meant scrumhalf when they asked if anyone had played hooker before.

No.8 for the killer B's at U14's starting off, then to centre/wing. After starting Junior team rugby I've been anywhere from 10-15. Mostly playing 10 these days but much prefer the centre.

No wonder there is a shortage of props coming through - they're all too busy on boards!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭jprender

    Fly-half or Full-back preferably.

It's all behind me now apart from the odd star performance for the oldies :pac:

    Damn it, I hate age.

Fullback, love a high ball. Sometimes on the wing but never really enjoyed it there.

That sounds like my time too:), played at 6 and 7 with my brother occasionaly playing 7 while I played 6. He was bigger, stronger and fitter but was great for holding onto outhalfs and I just had to run into him while the bro turned him:) Now I'm really pissed I stopped playing at Junior school level and discovered kicking the crap out of people.....as part of the rules:cool:

However, having a great time watching my sons playing now.

Great, great thread, some very funny stories here :-) :-)

6 or 7. As I've gotten older (heavier and slower) it's been more 6 than 7. I think I've played everywhere bar 9&10 at some point along the way.

I'll always be a 7 at heart though.

Started off 2nd row because i was tall underage. Moved to training with the backs after 2 weeks when they realised I was one of the fastest at training. Ended up plying my trade on the wing and a little fullback. School had me at 7 a few times (soft job :D)

Knocking around 13,14,15 for the local club now and lovin it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,741 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

scrum half and open side WF - did a bit at full back and hooker too

i hated scrum half , particularly after i started smoking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭bonnieprince

played mostly 2nd row underage and then i thought i could be a fullback/wing/centre (how wrong was I, way too cold out there) ended up playing blindside in college then discovered loose women and beer (not in that order) ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

Played for 6 years in secondary school and played in every position in the pack and also centre and wing. My fitness levels decreased rapidly during them 6 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,838 ✭✭✭theboss80

i played at hooker, i remember going down 2 first training session at 11 years of age mid season and the coach saw me and said id be the new hooker and the existing hooker was made a prop.
