Dell XPS M1330 GPU problem

    Hi,

Today my laptop screen suddenly went blank and then started showing some lines. Tried to connect to a monitor but that too didn't help. The screen has some blue, green, black etc lines. Turning it ON and OFF too won't help shows the same output.

Any idea what I should do? Seems my warranty ran out in Feb last year. I got it in February 2008.

    Thanks

Sounds like the GPU has failed. Normally they should last years and years, but that particular GPU (and many from Nvidia at the time) has a defect that shortens their life.

The GPU is part of the motherboard so can't be replaced without replacing the whole thing, very expensive.

Dell extended the warranty of affected systems by one year (beyond the original warranty) so it sounds like you are out of luck by about 2 months.

I'd suggest calling Dell and seeing what they say. Maybe arm yourself with some consumer rights info, and argue as much as possible (ask for superior etc). There is a forum for that stuff so i'd suggest visiting that for better advice (LINK) but as far as I know, under Irish consumer law, a product should last a reasonable amount of time, regardless of warranty, and for an expensive laptop, a touch over two years is definitely NOT reasonable. And seeing as how this GPU is known (and widely documented) to be defective, you are probably well covered if you took it to the small claims court.

Good luck anyhow. I think there was a chap here recently with the same problem and he got it fixed....search the forum for more info.

Yeah, I got mine repalced lately. My laptop was 15 months old. Warranty was extended by 1 year.
