Cover Letter, CV and E-mail

    Just a question for yas all.

    If you are sending in a CV and cover letter by e-mail, whats the best way to go about it?

    If the actual message in the e-mail is your cover letter (Dear XX...saw this position...please find my CV attached...etc)

    as opposed to just having your cv and cover letter as attachments?

    what works best?

    The former, the point of the cover email/letter is to get the CV read.

    You could end up with some kind of russian doll scenario where you worry what to put in the email to make sure the first attachment is read so that the second attachment is read etc.

    It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me?     Johnny, that's the wrong advice with respect.

    So does the hiring manager get a blank email with two attachments?


    If anyone out there has had to deal with significant numbers of applicants they'll tell you that a cover email is sufficient.

    Unless you know for certain that the email recipient is competent with email and attachments, there's no guaranteed good approach.

    I've been tending to put the same content in the email and the cover-letter-attachment.

    I've seen some advice that says to only have one attachment, with an innocent name like "doc1.doc" so that they absolutely have to read both the letter and CV. Otherwise some folks ignore the cover letter where you point out what a good fit you are for the job and just look at the CV. I'm still not certain if I think it's a good idea.

    (TBH, I've been a hiring manger, and I was taught to I ignore the cover letter, and focus on the CV, looking first at the employment history to see what they've actually done (ie ignore the claims they make, focus on actual technical competency), and then look at history and education for gaps. That's for professional IT positions though, may be a different approach is used for other jobs.)

    I would say have the cover letter in the e-mail and attach the CV
