Toshiba Equium A100 147 No Display

I am trying to fix a Toshiba Equium A100 147 with no display. I am trying to get to the root of the problem. It powers up ok with absolutle no display so I assume the motherboard is ok. I checked all cables and they seem fine. When I hook it up to an external monitor there is still no display so I am thinkin there is an issue with th onboard graphics chip.
The thing is when I look inside it, the graphics chip does not have any sort of heatsink covering it, even do it seems to have had a tiny bit of thermal paste applied previously. Am I missing something?
I found a photo on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140330443818&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) Its the chip below the CPU socket. Should something be covering or attached to this. If so whats it called.

Is there anyone familiar with this graphics/heatsink issue. I've searched everywhere for info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could it need a new inverter.

I had a similar problem with my brother in laws A100, no display when it switched on even on an external monitor, all his connections looked fine too but nothing seemed to fix the problem, even swapped out the memory since it was shared with the graphics but nada. We thought it was the graphics as well because it would give a beep code sometimes - not that we could identify it since we couldnt remember what the bios was. Ended up putting a new screen on and it works fine now, even the vga out works.

I can't remember if the graphics had anything on it or not, but if you have a compatible screen try swapping over, at least that way you'll know for definate if its a board issue or a screen one.

Yeah, Since found out that the Graphics should be covered by a heatsink plate. I dont know if the graphics is fried or not.

A little odd I think that in your issue the external monitor or VGA out didn't work.
