    Hi all,

Has anybody any idea how much one would ask for in a salary negotiation working as a waste recycling engineer?

What hourly rate would be a good amount to bring to the negotiating table?

had a look at job sites but cant find any advertised :(

Its for a mate who is re negotiating his salary as his company are being bought out but he is being kept on.

he has done this kind of work (mostly manual labour it must be said) for 8 years now and hasnt had a huge wage increase over that time.

all your help / suggestions are appreciated.

    regards
    morph

    Hi OP,

More information would be good- what does he actually do? What skills and/or qualifications does he have or are needed for his role? Is he essentially a binman or is he an Engineer by profession (i.e. degree in Engineering, chartership etc.)? Are all the 8 years in the same role?

By getting an idea of what the role is like and qualifications needed I could give you some information on guideline salaries for the Engineering sector. Also, is he paid a wage or salary as your post mentions both.

    8 years

more of a binman role in a pharmaceutical company

he has done a lot of training courses during his time there, ive asked him to provide me a list.

he has no degree, he has been in work since secondary school more or less.

Unfortunately all the salary info I have would be for "Professional" Engineers- those who have degrees/masters etc. in an Engineering discipline and are eligible for or/are Chartered. I'm not quite sure how to put it without sounding pedantic or petty, but it is genuinely not meant in that way. The term "Engineer" is not regulated in Ireland which often leads to confusion between those who are "professional" Engineers as described above and those who might work in the field who lack a more formal education or simply those with creative job titles.

The Pharma sector is very big on CPD and there could be some real value in the courses he has completed- if any of them are accredited by an external body and relate to regulatory standards (quality, validation etc.) I would most definitely put them on the 'ole CV and play them up in his salary review. As with everything, something is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it- if it would be difficult for him to find a new job in his field and the new owners know this, he could be in a weak bargaining position.

The best advice I could give your friend would be to really think about and identify what skills/experience/knowledge he has that are of value and play them up.
